Athletics have drawn people together since the first Olympics in ancient Greece. Athletics have the ability to break through language barriers. With over 265 million registered players worldwide, nearly four percent of the world population, and over three billion viewers soccer is clearly the sport most capable of breaking barriers. Since 1930, the FIFA World Cup of Soccer has taken place every four years bringing together 222 Countries from six continents, and billions of viewers worldwide. Each of the accused have held executive positions in FIFA, some have been previously forced to step down due to questionable ethics in the past. Sepp Blatter now former FIFA President after resigning just days after his May 2015 re-election “maintains that he was not involved in any alleged wrong doing” and that he is “pleased to see that the investigation is being energetically pursued for the good of soccer (football) and believe that it will help to reinforce the measures that FIFA has already taken” (Foss). However many are skeptical that Blatter is truly innocent when nearly every single one of his colleges have either been arrested or have resigned following previous investigations. Conti focuses largely on the engineering aspect of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, it is important to note that this is not Brazils first time hosting. They also hosted the 1950 World Cup. This was the first World Cup after WWII in which few countries participated, opting to focus on rebuilding (Vinton 7). In WWII Brazil suffered minimal losses when compared to much of Europe, allowing Brazil to host the games uncontested and also to build Macarena Stadium, which at the time was the largest stadium in the world (Vinton 7). Sixty-four years later Brazil once again faced no competition in bidding for the World Cup. Unfortunately, Brazilian officials are known for their “lack of transparency in their failures to control costs and adhere to deadlines” (Vinton 7). One contractor stated, “for Brazil money is no issue, I don’t know where they are getting it from but they are spending an incredible amount on the World Cup” (Conti 51). The expected cost of the World Cup is $1.6 Billion, more 85% of the cost placed on taxpayers (Conti 51). When just two years prior there were constant protests against hosting the Confederations Cup (Conti 51). At first glance the massive $10.8 Billion cost seems justified when they are also set to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, however for the $3.4 Billion it costs Brazil to construct 12 new stadiums, both of the previous hosts, South Africa and Germany built
