In the 21st century, society always revolves around technology, and sometimes people forget how technology can be so important. Many people around the world spend hours going through their social media scrolling facebook newsfeed, instagram, Youtube, twitter, snapchat, and other social media applications on their phones or computers. Society in today, people generally have their own daily routine of checking social media every now and then; this commonplace phenomena have become normalized in our civilization. Snapchat enables the use of cinema by the use of clicking one button in order to take a photo or a ten second video, and can easily be edited with different filters. After creating the filter, an individual can send their picture or video to a selected group of friends for them to view and be entertained. Also, an individual can upload pictures and videos to their snapchat stories. The stories are a fun way to keep up with friends, and each story is a compilation of snaps that can last over the last 24 hours for viewers to see. Nathan Jurgenson who is a sociologist and a researcher at Snapchat has came to our lecture as a guest speaker. He became in interested working at snapchat because he was drawn by photography, social media design, culture, and behavior of the application. Nathan notes, “Cameras didn’t have the option of sharing before, but now people can share photos. It’s more than social network, it's the way of talking. I’ve been with snapchat with couple of months, it’s interesting to know what else we can do with cameras.” He also discussed how the interface platform of snapchat is important; snapchat shows us culture compared to instagram. It’s important to express your thoughts at that moment with your camera, he addresses, “Culture says human face is important Some people don't want to see their wrinkles by other people on social media, older people have harder times on social media. But snapchat you don't have to pose, unlike instagram. It’s important to know what you want to express at this moment. That is a big gateway for those people who thinks they are not photogenic, it’s about expressing yourself.
