I choose teen pregnancy as my SLP topic because of it’s negative effect on my family. For generation the women in my family have been victims of circumstance and mother child at an early age. My grandmother gave birth to nine children, seven girls and two boys. To my knowledge there was four different father. Five of my aunts gave birth to children in their teen years, my mother who was raised by her father’s family was 21 when she gave birth to her first child. This cycle has continued in our family tree, as a side before one of my cousins gave birth to her first child at the age of 14. Teens need evidence based programs that allows them to speak openly and frankly; and teaches alternative to participating in sexual activities (Massachusetts Alliance on Pregnancy, 2016). My objectives for this program would be educational and behavioral.
Objective one: Create an educational program for girl that are in the risk factor group, teaching heathy sexual health habits. I would start this program upon the girl entry into 9th grade and conclude at their high school graduation. The program will follow these girls the entire 4 years, parent permission will be need in order to participate. When we think of teenage women getting pregnant we often times think of young women that are engaging in unprotect sexually actives, but that’s not always the case. There are several risk factors that contribute to teen pregnancy some are unthinkable. While we know that socioeconomic play a huge roll in teen pregnancy here are some other to consider; sexual abuse and adult men fathering children with teenage women (Davis, 1996). An effective program would consist of clear goals, teen involvement, and community collaboration (Davis, 1996). Not only should the program included training from obstaining from sex, there should be classes on contraception, and classes on maintaining healthy relationships should be offered as well (Davis, 1996). As stated earlier, some teen pregnancy are products of sexual abuse and manipulation from older men. With that being the program should offer Psychosocial counseling. We’ve learned from research that girls that participate in sexual activity at an early age are more likely to use and abuse drug and alcohol. Therefore, the program should offer a substance abuse program, that can teach the young ladies better life schools. In addition, class should be offered to both genders, while girls are the ones that get pregnant, young men also need help in making good decision when it comes
