Another reason that causes the negative relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance is the impact of high-stress level that is caused by sleep deprivation. As mentioned earlier, sleep deprivation could decrease a student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, it can also make the students feel more stressful. According to the survey conducted in Ball State campus, there are 15 students that often do their homework before they go to bed. 10 students play video games, computer games, and mobile games before they go to sleep. 8 students use their electronic devices to do social activities. 5 students watch movies and television series and 2 students read books before they go to bed. This is also proven by a study, which shows that students who perform worse on their exams seem to be more stressed and suffer from poor sleep quality (Ahrberg, Dresler, Niedermaier, Steiger, & Genzel, 2012). For instance, student A is a freshman at Ball State University. This student only sleeps for 6 hours because of bad sleeping habits and later on he sleeps for only 4 hours because of the new environment which has many factors that affect his sleep schedule such as social life, school activities or extracurricular activities. Then sleep deprivation is starting to affect him. He have a test the next day and studied the whole night and only slept for 2 hours. The next day, while he was having the test, he started to feel very tired, sleepy and stressed. He couldn’t concentrate on the test so he failed the test. He started to feel more stressed because of bad grades which might make him take the course again. He couldn’t sleep for more than 4 hours and these bad cycle repeats. Moreover, high stress could also affect the emotion of the students. It can also cause depression which can significantly decrease the academic performance and grade point average of a student. Bad sleeping habits are the common cause of sleep deprivation. There are some tips on how to get a good night of sleep. First of all, it is important to follow a consistent bedtime routine, because there is a certain pattern that the human body follows for regular activities. A good example would be eating habits. The chances of getting stomach and intestine diseases are much smaller when a pattern is followed every time you eat. Skipping or delaying meals could increase the risk of getting diseases in your digestive system. The brain also follows the same behavior, it needs constant rest so it is really important to follow a consistent bedtime routine. Second tip is to establish a relaxing setting at bedtime. Often times, students cannot sleep immediately after doing homework, studying for test, playing computer games, and other activities that uses the brain a lot. The brain needs to feel relaxed in order to enter the stage of complete rest. Third, it is advisable not to go to the bed hungry, nor consuming a big meal before bedtime. Both of these will make the body feel uncomfortable, and the brain will find it more difficult to get proper rest. Fourth, excessive exercise before bedtime is also a bad sleeping habit, since the body will feel excited. Although regular amount exercise is advisable during daytime.
