Sitcom Analysis

American Sitcom is a popular genre that features many characters sharing similar life problems in the same environments. The genre is also famous for going against the trope of a normal nuclear family by highlighting the dysfunctional side of a family. The environment usually comes from the ideal of the American middle class family, “sitcom has often been defined as an easily understood genre” (Brett Mills, 2009, P.27). Arguably American Sitcoms are known for being uncomplicated as a way for the audience to connect and escape from reality to become involved with a new lifestyle. Many contemporary sitcoms that have become popular are Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men and Friends, these have become mainstream as they target it …show more content…

Two and a Half Men is known worldwide for having Charlie Sheen playing the main role; arguably he plays himself with his own characteristics being the man who desires women 24/7, with his brother Alan being the one you may class as more ‘intelligent’. Jake the son of Alan is arguably a younger version of Charlie who looks up to him and the women he sees. Overall we see the trope of this dysfunctional family with them hating their mum. However, linking to (Freud. S. 1940) sexuality theory; we see an example of this in the episode when Charlie goes for a woman that is a twin to his mum which could suggests that he is attracted to the mother figure although he never shows any affection towards his mother, in this episode everyone else is aware of what is happening except Charlie. Furthermore, Modern Family has a very similar plot to Two and a Half Men, however it shows more of a nuclear family with Claire and Phil being the parents and the three children Hayley, Alex and Luke. They all play a certain role within the family but then they have the homosexual uncles and a granddad with a young Spanish wife. Arguably this shows the idea of a dysfunctional yet contemporary family as we see modern day tropes. One of the main norms we see in Two and a Half Men is the idea of the laugh track. All American sitcoms vary with different cast and plot but they all keep a very similar ideology with some differences. For example, Alan, in Two and a Half Men to Phil in Modern Family. They are both dads that have identical dress codes with the beige chino trousers and a checked shirt; their personalities are alike as they both say similar jokes about woman and life problems. However they do have differences such as Phil is a child at heart but carries out the father figure roles and cares about his wife and children; whereas Alan cannot carry out some of the more simple tasks and cares about his son but apart from that he is very incapable character. Furthermore we see a variety of camera angles when watching the American Sitcoms, in both Two and a Half Men and Modern Family there is a lot of close ups of facial expressions as this is where we see all of the humour.
