I believe that Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and HG Well’s Island of Dr. Moreau both explore similar themes in gothic science fiction. Both of the books explore the dangers of scientific progressivism: which includes creating different creatures out of humans then the creators not taking responsibility for the creatures. In both books, the two main characters face many struggles in their tragic lives. Moreau and Victor both abandon their creations and in the end of the books and their lives result in death. Moreau and Victor both have unique stories, but they are similar in many ways. In this paper, I will compare and contrast the influences of the scientist and the consequences of their work.
In Frankenstein, Victor creates the monster because he had a strong ambition to become a God like. I think Victor has never had control of his own life so he wanted to create something he has control of. Once he somewhat had the control of something he let it go. In The Island of Dr. Moreau, Moreau was kicked out England because of the science he wanted to try. He moved to the island to do his mad science and have control of it, which leads me to think he was also trying to be God like Victor. …show more content…

The influence each scientist is different. Victor was influenced by the death of his mother through misery and his intelligence to do make something that has never been made before. In chapter 3 Victor states “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein — more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation."
