Similarities Between Choose Something Like A Star And Bright Star

The poet John Keats, who writes “Bright Star” and the poet Robert Frost, who wrote “Choose Something Like a Star” both share a common writing style which is shown through the similarity in the theme, structure and other poetic devices in their poems. Both of these poems are structured similarly. They are not broken up into triplets or quintets, they are in paragraph- style. In Frost’s poem he alludes to Bright star in the 18th line “And steadfast as Keats’ Eremite.” An Eremite is a hermite ot recluse who is under a religious vow. Both poems use the same diction and one alludes to the other. The poem by John Keats uses a Shakespearean meter to create a sonnet using the rhyme scheme (ababcdcdefef). While poem by Robert Frost uses a more random meter going (aabaabcb). These differing rhyme schemes cause the poems to be read differently, and even to have a different tone. The Shakespearean meter causes Bright Star” to be read with a more romantic and whimsical tone, while “Choose Something Like a Star is read with a more static tone; less whimsical, more serious. While both poems are structured similarly, Frost’s poem does not change at the end, like “Bright Star”. The narrator also compares Tess to a “fly on a billiard-table of indefinite length, and of no more consequence to the surroundings than that fly.” By comparing Tess to a fly he is saying that her life, is small and unchanged by her environment, as she is working on a huge farm and is of no real importance, much like a fly. The narrator also states right after that quote that she is much like a heron, with no real importance to the valley. She and her environment are not affected by one another. The only way Tess has changed is her spirit has become more dull.
