Comparing the Stars of Bright Star and Choose Something Like a Star
Keats "Bright Star" and Frost's "Choose Something Like a Star" although similar in their address to a star differ in form, tone and theme. The latter contains an illusion to the former that brings Keats' themes into the poem. In order to compare these poems it is necessary to look carefully at their themes and constructions. "Bright Star" is a sonnet in traditional iambic pentameter. Its tone is elegiac as it celebrates the woman's beauty and his love for her in his plea for steadfastness. The poem opens with an apostrophe to the star which calls our attention to his plea. The verbs "would" and "were" indicate his wish to be like the star whom he addresses as "thou." The star is "hung" in the night, a pleasant image, and he uses a simile to compare it with Eremite, a hermit, who presumably sat apart from the world watching. The eyelids of this star (the star is given anthropomorphic qualities) are eternally apart -- always watching, "patiently" and "sleeplessly." Keats then enumerates what this star watches. It watches water -- which is also steadfast as indicated by the comparison "priest-like." The waters that surround the land Keats says are performing ablutions or cleansings and blessings on the land. The star also gazes upon the snow. He uses the metaphor of snow as a "mask" (more personification) as it hides the mountains and moors. The "m" alliteration emphasizes the falling of the snow. The repetition of "of" underlines the parallel structure and idea of the two scenes the star regards. The rhythm of this 2nd quatrain is slow and peaceful like the scene. ...t not only continues the "poetic tradition" but adds all the depth of meaning of Keats' poem to his own. The star doesn't want much of us -- only to stay above us. He says that "when the mob is swayed" or when social, political, or moral upheaval takes place and the norm is to be radical, the star likes being above it all, condescendingly regarding the earth. When this happens, we should "choose something like a star" and concentrate on it. In the final line the similarity between "stay" and "staid" emphasizes that we must emulate the star in being constant and moderate while society may revolve around us in social or political turmoil. This "staidness" is our key to survival like the stars'.
Therefore, one can see that these poems although similar in their title and central image of the star differ in their themes, form and treatment of the author's ideas.
In stanza three, “away” and “stay” and “grow” and “rose” make that stanza really stay put in the mind of the reader. Smart lad, to slip betimes away. From fields where glory does not stay. And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. The rhyme in this poem brings the reader closer to the irony of the poem and the message of the poem.
Both poems are set in the past, and both fathers are manual labourers, which the poets admired as a child. Both poems indicate intense change in their fathers lives, that affected the poet in a drastic way. Role reversal between father and son is evident, and a change of emotion is present. These are some of the re-occurring themes in both poems. Both poems in effect deal with the loss of a loved one; whether it be physically or mentally.
Robert Frost's "Take Something Like a Star" and Richard Wilbur's "Love Calls Us to the Things of This World" are two poems which both invoke the audience to become involved in life while taking inspiration and guidance from spiritual forces manifested in the visible world. Frost's poem uses Keat's "Bright Star" as a launching point for discussion while Wilbur recalls in his title a phrase from St. Augistine's Commentary on the Psalms; yet both authors present complete discussions without requiring from the reader a foreknowledge of the earlier works. For Frost the central image is a star, any star, whose illumination can invoke man to lift his thoughts from the commonplace and mundane; and for Wilbur the central image is a simple clothesline hung with laundry, an image which invokes visions of the spiritual soul floating in the breeze yet at the same time connected to the common world of laborers, thieves, and lovers. Both poems, therefore, see the need for man to be aware of both his earthly and spiritual worlds and to achieve a balance between the two that elevates and defines him as a creature of God. Robert Frost and Wilbur Richard rely on good word choice to exemplify their common theme. Frost's "Take Something Like a Star" sticks with the word star to represent God. All of the adjectives that Frost uses to describe the star also go hand in hand with God. In the Poem "Love Calls Us to the Things of This World", Wilbur uses laundry on a clothesline to characterize the human spirit. Although the imagery in each poem is distinct, the similarity of message in both poems is evident. The poems are similar in that the narrator’s lives are empty and contain no passion for pursuing anything. The ideas reflected in these poems are seen even today, in such things as listless living and job-related apathy. Both poems suggest that a life where dreams of meaningless things are pursued will end without purpose or significance.

Keats’ mother and brother, and eventually he too, passed away of tuberculosis. At the time of his brother 's passing, he developed ‘La Belle Dame sans Merci’. ‘La Belle’ expressed Keats’ intellect and creativity, although at the same time he himself expressed his angst and depression for the loss of his brother. His poem ‘Bright Star’ was written in a part of his life in which a woman had influenced Keats’ greatly, so much in fact that he was driven to write ‘Bright Star’ in appreciation and celebration of the love of his life. Frost uses a metaphorical star to represent a moral compass, urging the reader to choose a path that aligns with their values. In terms of literary devices, Keats uses a sonnet structure with a volta, or turn, in the final two lines to express his desire for constancy. Frost, on the other hand, uses a looser structure with irregular rhyme and meter to convey a sense of freedom and individuality.
Keats presents his feelings on how he no longer wishes for impossible goals, and how it is much more preferable to enjoy life as much as possible. It is of no use longing for things we cannot have, and so we must learn to live with the myriad of things we already have, of these one in particular appeals to Keats: the warmth of human companionship and the passion of love.
I intend to demonstrate that both poems largely follow the rules of haiku. However, they achieve their effects by using different techniques. Despite the fact that the contexts of the two poems set them apart, both poems can be thought of as having similar meanings.
To conclude it has been firmly established that Keats had a profound ability to use literary techniques. Throughout his all his Odes he uses a variety of different devices, bringing forth our senses of taste, sight, smell, hearing and touch, creating an overall unique sensual experience. In reading his poetry I have gained a new found adoration and insight to the world of poetry. Reading deeper into the use of certain words and images has demonstrated that each word is as important as the previous, or next in this establishment of arousing ones senses. The world of sense has truly been evoked throughout Keats masterpieces.
The education system in India is based on forced learning that kills student’s spirit and zest of learning. In the film “Like Stars on Earth,” we look specifically at the draw backed role played by parents and teacher in Indian education system. We follow the story of a dyslexic Indian boy, Ishaan, who always had trouble coping with his studies, but in the end with the help of an understanding teacher he is able to study normally and catch up with his peers.
