Bonheur de vivre & Les demoiselle Avignon vs The Large Bathers This painting above is “The large bathers” by the French painter Paul Cézanne, it is an oil-on-canvas picture and it is the largest among his paintings. Many artworks by other famous painting are seen as being inspired by the large bathers of Cézanne, bellow I will be comparing two paintings by Matisse and Picasso that share some visual similarities with it. Bonheur de vivre Bonheur de vivre and also known under Joy of life is a famous painting made in 1905 by Henri Matisse. This painting by Matisse is rather a large painting that depicts nude figures in motion and resting in a nature. It is an imaginary composition of his that he created during his fauves years in the south of France. In the painting we see brilliantly colored forest in the background we can spot the sea and the sky which the female characters are enjoying and relaxing by. Many argues that Bonheur de Vivre by Matisse can be seen as an imitation or better yet as being inspired by and breaking free of Paul Cézanne’s The Large Bathers. When someone shares this opinion, I can clearly see where they are coming from because there are some clear visual similarities between those two pieces. The first visual element that pop to me first in those two paintings is the way that Matisse painted the female characters in Bonheur de vivre, they are very curvy and share the same curvature of those of Cézanne, the women in Matisse work are a lot more sensual in comparison to The Large Bathers.
