Similarities Between A Christmas Carol

There was a very greedy old man who was haunted by 3 spirits. They helped change his ways by showing him his past, present, and future. They showed how he was sad and alone as a child, greedy in the present, and, in the future, to die alone unmissed. There were many differences and similarities from the drama to the movie called A Christmas Carol in the conflict, climax, and resolution.

In the play by Charles Dickens, the conflict is man vs. self. Marley’s ghost is talking to the audience about Scrooge, a wicked old man who was selfish and greedy. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge leaves his work office after talking to his nephew about Christmas being a “humbug” (Dickens 1). Then after he is home, the ghost of Marley tells him he will be haunted

by 3 spirits. First he was to be haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Past. Past showed him what he was like as a boy, unloved by his father because his mother died while giving birth to him. Then as a slightly older boy, still alone, but, his sister went to take him back home. Next he was haunted by the Ghost of Christmas Present. Present shows him how only two people are actually grateful for him, Bob Cratchit said,”I’ll give you Mr. Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast” (Dickens 25). Then he was haunted by a phantom which was the Ghost of Christmas Future. Future showed that Scrooge was to die alone, if the shadows remain unchanged. He was also shown that Tiny Tim was to die if the shadows were unchanged. Bob had said, “I am sure that none of us will forget poor Tiny Tim - shall we(Dickens 33)?” That changed him and so he bought a turkey and had it delivered to Bob Cratchit. Then he went to his nephew’s house and asked if he could dine with them.
In the movie from 1984, the conflict is also man vs. self. Scrooge is faced with the same problem. He is an unliked greedy old man. Marley tells him about the 3 spirits that were to haunt him. He was shown his past, present, and future. He was shown how alone he was. How he was thanked by Cratchit and his nephew. He was also shown he was to die alone. He then bought the turkey and sent it to Cratchit. He then went to his nephew’s house to dine with them.
There were many differences between the movie and play. First Marley didn't introduce himself and Scrooge to the audience in the movie like he did in the play. Second there wasn’t really a stage. Third in the play Past was a male spirit. Past was actually female in the movie. Also Marley did not take his head off in the movie. Those are the similarities and differences in the drama and movie A Christmas Carol.
