Silence of the lambs Advance Content Critism November 6th, 2015 Brody McMaster Silence of the Lambs, is commonly said to be one of the most famous thrillers made. After watching the film for the first time, I noticed the director had many interesting themes and concepts. Some of these themes included, good vs. evil, the search for peace, judging a book by its cover, and gender and sexuality in the workplace. The theme I found most interesting, and what I found the director made most apparent, was gender and sexuality in the workplace. The director showed that gender and sexuality in the workplace was the most noticeable theme because of the constant contrasts set between Clarice and her male co- workers, her continuous denial about her femininity, and the amount of danger Clarice runs into because as a women, she is always having to do things on her own. Clarice was shot from high as well as low angles looking up on certain men. This is an easy, although effective way of portraying her as small and weak. The film is filled with creepy music and sound effects. Lecter is also always close and in the center of the frame, to make it feel like he is invading your personal space, another effective technique when filming successful thrillers. Lastly, the film the Silence of the Lambs has a symptomatic meaning. It reflects the theme of how women in the workplace in our modern society are accurately portrayed, and how even though Clarice was a great fit for an FBI agent, she was always put off to the side and talked down to. Overall, even though I am not a big fan of thrillers like this, I definitely enjoyed watching and depicting the film, as it was a film that displayed accurate examples and themes how a women in a man’s world is most likely
