The “Silence of the Lambs” directed by Jonathan Demme based on the story by Ted Tally, is a psychological thriller film that involve the main character(s) Clarice Starling, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and Jamie Gumb. Most of story in the film take place around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1989-90s. In the film, Jodie Foster played the female protagonist Clarice Starling, a F.B.I agent who worked in the behavioral science unit; which was assigned to confide and interrogate an incarcerated killer to receive insight into a case that would be helpful on catching another vicious serial killer. In addition, this particular shot is also a walk and talk were the two police officers are talking to each other about the insistence of the meal. The camera continues tracking the two police officers until they placed the food tray in the floor. Its noticeable because the shot was taken inside of the metal bars cell using a high angle shot looking down and out of the metal bars to the food tray, hands and feet of the two police officers. By the same token, the camera slowly tilts up making a close up to the police stick and silver keys positioned on the right side of the screen. This conveys to us that the person we are about to see is dangerous and must be isolated form the rest of humanity. Thus, the used of light in the shot was a key light, only focusing in the stick and the silver keys of the two police officers making a hard dark in the back of the objects. This give us the sense that the person we about to see in the next shot is a macabre. In the same sequence of shot the next shot was a close-up of a white man face who appears to be about forty-five years old. The man is centered on the screen and in his mouth we can see a small piece of metal that can be used to kill or scape. In this specific shot we can notice that the man is a prisoner because the white shirt and white pants he is wearing, but most importantly the shirt has numbers like this B5160-8, representing the inmate’s ID identification. Equally important, the soft classical music was kept repeating itself. Then the camera moves behind the man who is in captivity making an extreme-close-up to the left hand of the white man, where we can notice the piece of metal bent into a lock pick, which the man conceals between two of his fingers. Again, the shot continues with an extreme close-up when the two police officers instructed the man to sit with his back against the bars and we clearly saw one of the police handcuffing the man arms behind the bars; not only that, but also the man using the small lock pick to escape. The camera pan right and tilt up at the police entering to the metal cage. The camera tracks forward the tray of food the police is carrying and tilts down as the police officer places the tray on the floor a few feet from the white man to clear the table. The police and car owner follow close behind him, trying to get the husband to pull over. The use of the single frame displays the husband’s dark silhouette as the camera focuses on the rearview mirror where the police can be seen gaining on him. It allows the viewer to take in both storylines simultaneously. The husband is still racing home to help his wife, but the police in the mirror also show the duality of his worries as they literally and figuratively hang over his shoulder. Meanwhile, in the mirror, the police are seen trying to grasp the husband in order to get him to stop. The two spaces for the characters gives the chance for the film to focus on the overall plot progression versus the time cut between the husband and the police separately. Dr. Hannibal Lecter a character in the film The Silence of the Lambs is portrayed as a brilliant forensic psychiatrist, an extremely refined gentleman with a charismatic and charming personality. Hannibal Lecter is meticulous in appearance, speaks very exactly, has immaculate wittiness, and astounding intellect (Demme, 1991). Though not directly indicated in the film, there is clear evidence of his educational background as he was a well-known forensic psychiatrist which requires an extensive amount of education. This film did not speak to Lecter’s relationship history nor his childhood background. Hannibal Lecter was sanctioned to the Baltimore State Forensic Hospital for cannibalistic crimes he committed against his own patients during his practice as a psychiatrist (Demme, 1991). At the start of the film it was indicated that he had been housed at the hospital for approximately eight years.

In the movie “Silence of the Lambs”, the secondary antagonist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, was interrogated by FBI trainee Clarice Starling on the whereabouts of the main antagonist nicknamed Buffalo Bill. Starling asked Lecter for his help on solving the case because he is a brilliant psychiatrist and psychopath, currently incarcerated at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Buffalo Bill was kidnapping young women and skinning them in order to make a “woman suit” for him to wear, being a deranged transvestite. Starling asked for Lecter’s expertise because of his medical background and experience with his own personal disorder. Lecter was presently imprisoned because he is a ruthless cannibalistic serial killer. Before the audience actually meets Lecter, they are told he is dangerous, manipulative and an outright monster, calling him a “most prized asset”. Upon meeting him, Lecter appears to be subdued within his cell, a combined mixture of oddness and genuine care in his body language and facial features. When Starling introduces herself, Lecter listens intently, seemingly approachable and friendly for advice. Although the tone of his voice gives off a rather disturbing persona, he can easily be categorized as a disciplined, cultural and polite individual at first glance. In the 16 minutes total that Lecter appears in the movie, his presence automatically commandeers the flow of the conversation and mood of the environment that he is placed in.

A huge contribution to why Silence of the Lambs is a thriller film is the character of deranged genius Hannibal Lecter. Played by Anthony Hopkins whom won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, Lecter holds the key to the case Detective Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster whom also won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is determined to solve. With such a situation, interrogation is essential as many other films within the thriller subgenre of Crime Thriller also show. By comparing Clarice Starling’s behavior within the interrogation setting to other detectives and women of thriller films, it is revealed that although Lecter may captivate the audience as well as Starling herself, it is Starling that makes the film so interesting in all of its genre-bending glory.
Dr. Hannibal Lector, one of the main characters of the story is a psychiatrist, but also happens to be a cannibalistic serial killer. Dr. Lector is introduced into the NBC series as a psychiatrist who occasionally helps the FBI with their murder cases. Whereas in Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Lector was being held in prison until he eventually broke loose. It is made clear to the audiences the Hannibal is definitely the killer, there is no mystery to that, which can make things interesting for this character in the Hannibal series of whether or not he’ll be caught.

The film is based on the book by Thomas Harris of the same name (Harris, 1988) . Although it was filmed in 1991, it remains one of the best psychological thrillers ever made. Jonathan Demme's film goes beyond the classical framework of the genre, playing with intellect viewer with associations . The movie surprises, though, even the predictability becomes a attractive - predictable places, characters, and events. Demme's film is in my opinion a great movie of crime, derived many, many of the thriller which has many unusual psychological content . Rarely do you find in contemporary cinema so well drawn characters, so scary and fascinating look of evil .
