As these plants photosynthesize, Oxygen is released as a byproduct and dissolves into the surrounding water. If nitrate and phospahte level is present in an area an increased amount of detritus will also be present due to the death and decay of the submerged plants. This provides an ideal food source for the Gammurus pulex and increases the chances of survival and reproduction. As a result you would expect to see an increase in the abundance of the species in polluted stream. Independent variable The independent variable within the experiment was the presence of pollution content such as pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate and phosphate level.
