Should teenagers be allowed on social media networks? Should teens have limited screen time per day? Studies show that there are now 1.79 billion people using Facebook, 320 million using Twitter, and 400 million using Instagram. Self-esteem is confidence in a person and that all ties in with depression, and how you make your accounts look and how you spend time on social media. Social media can lower a teenagers' self-esteem as much as 50 percent by teenagers sharing their personal information, teenagers being stressed and exhausted from the amount of time they are on their phone, and a sign of depression when it comes to teens being addicted to social media on a daily basis. Parents need to be over-protective and teach their kids to be role-models. Teens should have limited screen time because they need to focus on school and homework and enjoying time with their friends and loved ones. No teens should rather want to be on social media than to be able to do something fun and memorable. Clearly, spending too much time on social media is leading to sleep loss and this is shown by the following quote: "Exhaustion. Weariness. Fatigue. Whichever phrase you prefer, reoccurring tiredness seems to be the new normal for a growing number of people, regardless of their age or race" (Ervolino 1). Social media has created a sense of urgency for teens and young adults to know what is going on in the world, and all of these factors can be an impact on how they sleep. Teenagers should get at least nine to twelve hours of sleep each night but a study shows that a majority of teens only get three to four hours of sleep. This is significant because sleep is way more important than facetiming your friend or playing a game on Facebook, sleep can impact who a person is and how a person does in school. Cell Phones. Technology. Social Media. Those three things are things nobody should be addicted to. People should realize that social media will be around for their entire life but their family and friends will not be. This person once said, "Addiction seemed to explain roughly three quarters of the effect of social media use on depression" (Goodier 1). This quote describes that there are different types of depression and that social media can affect anyone no matter what the point is. When it comes to depression, it involves a person being let down. For example, a break up, losing a loved one, there are many reasons to be depressed, but social media should not be one of the reasons. There are many people who should be depressed because of how they are doing in their schooling and that is a rough 21 percent who say they are depressed in school. Depression is not wanting to partake in any activities such as a family gathering, it is wanting to stay home on technology and not worry about the world. This is significant because it shows that social media should not be a leading factor of depression. No one should rather want to stay home on social media because he or she is depressed over a family gathering because the family aspect will make the person happier and forget about
