When we think of education we picture our children being taught by a teacher that has control over their class room. You drop off your child at school and you are confident that the teacher will do all they can to help your child succeed. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Teachers have many ways to help a child but at times they are very limited due to standards that they have follow. Teachers are more worried about teaching to the standards than expanding the child’s creativity. As Ken Robinson, author of "Creative Schools" claims that the problems in education are due to teachers only teaching to the standards. This shows that teachers are only teaching to one learning style. In order to help all students, understand they should be taught in the way they will understand. Teachers should get together with previous teachers and even parents to get an idea of the students. If the teacher is able to have a better grasp on how their students learn better they will be able to provide a lesson plan according to their students’ needs. Having stations to help all students learning needs identifying the students learning style is key for the student’s success. Like Montaigne says, “we often spend a lot of time and effort for nothing, training children for things in which they cannot get a foothold”. This shows that no matter how much we spend telling a child something over and over, as a teacher we are unable to understand how they learn best they will not understand. Montaigne writes “as those people want to train our understanding without setting it in motion”. This is a perfect example that we need to give students, opportunities to be creative in their own way. Training students to color inside the lines and not letting them expand their imagination is putting boundaries in their creativity. Telling students that they need to draw triangles for the body of girls is giving the students a narrow and straight way of thinking. When working on an assignment let them explore other ways to get the information. Not giving them coloring worksheets is one of the biggest examples, if we give children worksheets to only color the picture how is this expanding their creativity. This is shutting their brain off from thinking outside the box. Rather give them a blank piece of paper to draw what they think a flower looks like or a dog.
