Heart disease claims 610,000 American lives a year accounting for 1 out of every 4 deaths in the U.S.. Other than cancer, heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. Yet for many people, the risk of developing heart disease as an adult can be prevented as a child. This can be done through regular physical activity. A 2016 study done by HealthDay shows that 90% of high schoolers don’t get enough daily exercise, and this habit carries over into adulthood. On the other hand, the 10% of high schoolers who do get the recommended amount of daily exercise, also carry the habit over into adulthood. To increase that 10%, kids should be encouraged to play sports before they reach their middle school years. This will physically and mentally benefit kids, all while teaching them important life skills. Playing sports on a regular basis can physically benefit kids greatly in many ways. Not only does it reduce the chances of certain diseases, but it also helps kids get into good shape. These skills include teamwork and time management. Teamwork is a skill that will be needed in almost any job you’ll ever have as an adult. In fact, 9 out of 10 jobs on average require you to work with another person. Most youth sports require you to work as a team in order to reach the ultimate goal; victory. If kids learn to work as a team at a young age, then it will make their adult lives much easier. Additionally, being able to manage a tight schedule is something that everyone should be capable of doing. Not only will you need to schedule for a job in your adult years, but if you end up having kids, you’ll have to schedule around their schedule too.
