During the mid-1500’s, unless you were wealthy enough to pay for comfortable accommodations while incarcerated, inmates who were housed in earlier versions of jails such as gaols or bridewells, lived unsanitary conditions, were rarely fed or clothed properly and were housed together regardless of gender, age or criminal status (Stohr & Walsh, p. 21). Although jailers, wardens, keepers or gaolers were not paid by the state or government during this time, they made their money by extracting from their inmates. If an inmate was unable to pay they were either tortured, murdered, made to live in fifth or left to starve (Orland, 1975, p. 17). With that being said, should inmates be made to work for their keep?
