Should High School Students be Paid for Having Good Grades? Students and how well they do in different subjects taught at a high school is a primary concern for many high schools and school boards around Canada. A student’s primary goal is to good grades in high school so he/she can progress to post secondary education. However, there aren’t very strong motives for some students to get good grades in school. I believe that high school students should be paid for having good grades because Canada’s unemployment and dropout rate will decrease and its literacy rate will increase, students from low-income families will benefit, and Canada will have a renowned and reputable education system around the world. To begin, if high school students are paid for having good grades, Canada’s unemployment and dropout rate would decrease and its literacy rate would increase. A 2008 study conducted by the University Of Winnipeg stated that students naturally get better marks if provided with a persuasive motive such as free food, or gifts. Many high school students will naturally aim to get better marks in school if they are provided with a convincing reason; money . Recently, New Pine Secondary School located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories started introducing the new concept of paying students for getting an average of eighty-five or more. Many students coming from low-income families including my childhood friend Khalid used this opportunity and improved their lives by using the money to buy useful items such as clothes, calculators, shoes, and new backpacks for school. This concept helps remove barriers for students from low-income families and improves their lives and education.
