In high school, I didn’t write papers. I didn’t study grammar. I didn’t have homework. High school was social time. High school was seen as a joke and a waste of time. As an 18-year-old, I was attending a day care 5 days a week. The academic push wasn’t there. Teachers didn’t want to be there just as much as I didn’t. My high school education could be seen as a wasted 4 years. Not learning material to prepare me for college is the biggest upset.
Teachers in public high schools should better prepare student for college. Standards are held so low that students put in the minimum effort to get by. More than 87% of college students would have worked harder in high school if they were being held to higher standards (Kirst). You get out of your students what you put in. Complete College America states 4 out of every 10-college freshman have to take remedial course (Kuczynski-Brown, Alex). One of the most common remedial classes, writing.
