This has gone on for too long, and it needs to stop! The pigs have been treating us like slaves, like we are the dirt beneath their feet. We need to stand up for ourselves! They sit there and watch us on their nice comfy beds, just watching us work day in and day out, then they take all of our hard work for themselves giving us nothing in return. We don’t deserve to be treated like this! We do everything they say when they say it with no rights and no liberty. Is this how you want to live your lives? No rights, no freedom, no equality? He was our first leader before Napoleon took over. Old Major was wise and had the vision of an equal world for all animals to be together in peace. Somehow, over these past few years these commandments were miraculously changed to benefit the pigs. Before all this chaos Old Major once said, “No animal must live in a house, or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade. All habits of man are evil. And, above all, no animal must tyrannise over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal” (Orwell 11). Now two of these rules have been changed. Now the commandments state, “No animal shall kill any other animal without cause” (91). He was compared to Czar Nicholas II who was a poor leader compared to the western kings, and also a cruel man who was brutal to his opponents. The pig who was named Old Major taught animalism which was compared to Karl Marx beliefs in communism. All animals were equal in Animalism, they had no owners, they were not rich nor were they poor and workers received a better life. In Communism all people were equal, the government owned everything and the people owned the government. Napoleon is the pig on the farm that wants all the power after the humans are kicked out. He was not a good speaker; he killed his opponents and used certain animals to control other animals on the farm.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm revolves around the idea of living in a world without humans, where animals can live equally with each other. According to Old Major, a “perfect world” should be one where certain rules and commandments are required to be followed. This perfect world is soon destroyed when Napoleon and the pigs begin to disregard and even rewrite commandments to their benefit in order to gain more power. Some of these rules include: All animals are equal, no animal should act human, and lastly, no animal should work with mankind. As a result, Old Major’s “perfect world” turns into a dystopian society because of Napoleon’s need for more power over equality.

Animal Farm by George Orwell, is an allegorical novel in which animals get mistreated and forgotten which represents the Russian revolution except using animals in place of humans. For example, the animals, like the pigs and horses were mistreated and forgotten about. Their owner, Mr. Jones has forgotten to feed them many times due to his own drunkenness, neglect and lack of responsibility. He would also treat some of the animals different from the others and give some animals better treatment by providing them with more food than the other animal. Mr. Jones knows he doesn't feed the animals but he does not care because most of the time he is drunk and doesn't remember anything. In the beginning of the text, “all animals are equal” (Orwell 6) and are united under the common goal of freeing themselves from “the tyranny of human beings” (5). However, life on the farm progresses in a manner contradictory to this initial belief, and ultimately does not benefit the masses. Rather, it is driven exclusively by and for the privileged elite, “the cleverest of animals” (9): the pigs. Napoleon and his supporters are able to impose their authority upon the “lower animals” (92) by using language to create “the seven commandments” (15), and consequently re-creating them when they see fit. For example, it was declared in the Commandments that “no animal shall kill any other animal” (61). Yet, when the very pigs that created the law break it, it is re-written such that “no animal shall kill any other animal without cause” (61). These subtle manipulations take place consistently throughout the story, until all previous laws are eradicated and replaced with one overarching commandment: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (90). Here Orwell highlights the fact that by re-writing the past, those in power are able to directly control the future. By monopolizing language, they monopolize progress. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm we get a glimpse of a strange switch in totalitarian rule. From Mr. Jones a cruel farmer who feeds his animals to little and works them to hard, to Napolean a pig that will have you killed for a bottle of liquor. Through stupidity, narrow mindedness and pure cowardice of some animals we view the inevitable as the farm animals become ruled by pigs. Old Major probably not the first animal to think of as an animal to ruin a utopia for the farm, is in most cases not a favored example to contribute to the pigs takeover. This pig finally near the end of his better than average life chose to create a rebellion against the then in power Mr. Jones. A truly justifiable act executed in a time to late, for Major died to soon to lead the farm. If Old Major had summed up an ounce of courage in his closer to piglet years further and earlier then his dying days the animals might have had a chance of a better life. Old Major can be seen as him being a late coward having what is thought on the farm to be a good life trying to end it a false legend or maybe Old Major was a slow hero wanting to leave a better life for his friends. Still though we should agree that for Old Major’s failing action or neglect was the time he chose to start a rebellion, in the few days before he died.

From the very beginning, Napoleon started breaking the commandment that stated all animals are equal. He had all the milk and apples set aside for the pigs. He put forth the idea that the pigs depended on these things for survival, and that it was in the interest of the entire farm that they be set aside for them. At the beginning on the text, after the rebellion, the animals are all seen as equal, with a high quality of life. Napoleon and Squealer often mentioned how important it was for all animals to do their equal share of work; however they often did little to no work. They were able to do this by Squealer acting as the media and reminding the animals that the hard work that the pigs did deserved a larger break then everyone else. As the text progressed, Napoleon and his small group of pigs slowly changed the commandments to suit themselves. Many animals didn’t question the change in commandments; and when they did they were either proven wrong or made an example of via public executions. During chapter 6, the pigs are questioned after allegedly breaking the 4th commandment “no animals shall sleep in a bed”. Squealer was quick to react, by stating that the pigs required extra rest due to how smart they were. When Muriel goes to read the commandments to prove that what the pigs are doing is wrong, she finds that the board now states “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. The most meaningful lectures to me were about the Ten Commandments and how they make Jewish people better in their lives. The Ten Commandments were given to the Jewish people through Moses, from God at Mount Sinai. Since that day, the commandments have been very important to Jewish life. They can be found twice in the Torah. First in chapter twenty of the book of Exodus, and they are then again repeated in chapter five of the book of Deuteronomy. There are slight variations to these repetitions which concerns the fourth commandment, regarding the Shabbat. In Exodus, it reads, “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy,” however in Deuteronomy it reads “Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy.”
