In the short story, “Ten with a flag”, by Joseph Paul Haines, it maintains, “Your child is a ten sir. Tens can’t be a burden on the state by definition. They are the ones that make the state better,” (Haines, 26). This is a perfect example of what a child that is a ten is meant for. The novel is about a society that has a system, which can determine what your future will be like before you are born. The main characters are a couple whose baby is a ten, but also has a flag. This dystopian society is built around a system where the government is available to know far to much information about the society, due to the fact, their technology is much greater than anything we have today. People need their freedom and rights. With having the …show more content…
As people come to the topic of citizen’s rights, the majority of us will readily agree that rights are very much needed in a society. It has become common in today’s society for the government to try and take away its citizens rights. “The flag is just an indication that the parents will have to make a sacrifice. Sometimes it means the child will be handicapped, and the parents will have to work additionally hours to make up for the burden on the state,” (Haines, 26). The flag is symbolizing family’s ability to take the best path in making their future better. Whether it is having the baby and knowing they will to make a sacrifice, or if it is not having the baby to help society as well as the families case. Therefore the people believe they have rights, even though the government already knows the future because of technology. In this dystopia’s society, a ten with a flag baby is very rare. “Your child is a ten sir, that should be enough to make you forget about the flag,” (Haines, 26). The ten with a flag baby is so significant and rare due to the fact that it is very hard to understand how a baby that is perfect could have a problem like a flag. Also, just having a baby that is rated a ten is ridiculously rare. Having rights in a society is what allows the citizens to have
Art has always been used to portray a message, American art is no different. Throughout the years American art has been created for many different reasons, including parody and satire. One such example is the painting The Surrender by Joseph Griffith. Although it contains jumbled imagery and may convey a mixed message, The Surrender's main message is that American culture is idolized by the youth of today and that American as a whole is waging war on cultures and religions it doesn’t understand.
Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers to the United States, was not a patriot but a mere loyalist to England before the dissolution between England and the colonies occurred. Sheila L. Skemp's The Making of a Patriot explores how Benjamin Franklin tried to stay loyal to the crown while taking interest in the colonies perception and their own representation in Parliament. While Ms. Skemp alludes to Franklin's loyalty, her main illustration is how the attack by Alexander Wedderburn during the Privy Council led to Franklin's disillusionment with the British crown and the greater interest in making the Thirteen Colonies their own nation. Her analysis of Franklin's history in Parliament and what occurred on the night that the council convened proves the change behind Franklin's beliefs and what lead to his involvement in the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution.
The book I would like to tell you about is called Among the Hidden. The author of this book is Margaret Peterson Haddix. In this book, there is a boy named Luke Garner who has never been able to leave his backyard. He has only been able to quickly peak through blinds for fear of being seen. Until the day the workers started cutting the trees down, Luke was able to experience a little fresh air while rough-housing with his brothers in their isolated backyard farmland. The reason for this is because of the population law. The government believed that there wasn’t enough food to feed the growing population, so they made the law that there is only a maximum of two children allowed in each family. That meant that Luke was an illegal third child. He had spent his whole life hiding from the population police. Since the government forced the Garners to sell a lot of their farmland for building houses, Luke had to stay inside, because now that the trees were being cut down he had a huge chance of being seen in his backyard. Luke spent most of his days in the attic where his room was. He found some little vents in the wall that he could look out of and see the people that moved into the big, fancy houses. One day, he noticed somebody peeking out of the house next door, even after he knew that everybody in that family had left. He knew this because he kept a little record on the wall and marked down when the people of each family came and left. He even knew how many people there were i...

What makes the topic about confederate flags so controversial? There are two sides to this topic. On one side we have people saying that it should be placed where the public can look at it. On the opposing side we have people that want to get rid of it. Does removing the flag violate our first amendment of free speech? The first editorial called, Symbolism of Confederate Flag Is Undeniable it is for the flag staying up in public places. The second editorial called, Take Down the Confederate Flag, Symbol of Hatred, this is editorial is for taking the confederate flags down permanently.
This essay is in favor of people flying the Confederate Flag due to its true meaning. In this essay I will provide the historical and the religious meaning of the flag, I will provide support for the flag, I will provide opposing viewpoints and a rebuttal for those viewpoints.
Controversy over the flying of the Confederate flag is rampant in today’s society. Specifically, whether the flags should be flown in public places such as schools, courthouses, and capitols. The Confederate flag has been flown over many state capitol buildings. Men across the southern half of the United States died simply for the ideas of that very flag. The flag memorializes the sons of the South who died during the Civil War. The men who lost their lives battling for the Confederacy were not simply fighting over slavery, they were engaging in battle for other very important factors such as trade, tariffs, and state rights. The Confederate flag should be allowed to be flown over public places such as schools, courthouses, and capitols because it captures the essence of American
Over the course of the last century, abortion in the Western hemisphere has become a largely controversial topic that affects every human being. In the United States, at current rates, one in three women will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45. The questions surrounding the laws are of moral, social, and medical dilemmas that rely upon the most fundamental principles of ethics and philosophy. At the center of the argument is the not so clear cut lines dictating what life is, or is not, and where a fetus finds itself amongst its meaning. In an effort to answer the question, lawmakers are establishing public policies dictating what a woman may or may not do with regard to her reproductive rights.
The current issues concerning a woman’s right to an abortion include the debates between pro-life and pro-choice groups that promote either restrictions or extensions to a woman’s ability to receive abortions respectively, along with debate about the role that the government should play in the process of limiting or extending rights. Pro-life groups argue many points against abortion including the beliefs that life begins at conception, adoption is a viable alternative to abortion, the procedures sometimes cause medical complications, a...
As one knows, some unwanted pregnancies could often be harmful and distressing for a woman. Women should have the right over their body to choose to sustain the fetus or not. In the past decades, women did not have their freedom of abortion in many countries of the world. There have always been controversies going on about abortion. Each individual has dissimilar views on the legality of abortion. Some people are against abortion for personal religious purposes and beliefs. For those who don’t believe in abortion, it is because they see it as killing a fetus, which is a human being. Others support abortion because they believe in women’s rights. Laws of abortion vary in each country, and abortion is not legal all over the world. It is illegal under any conditions but only permitted to save woman’s life if in countries such as Brazil, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, and Ireland. However, abortion is legal without any restrictions in countries like Canada, Albania, and Italy. It the past decades Abortion was considered as criminal act in Canada. “If an abortion was carried out without such approval, the woman was liable for imprisonment for 2 years, an...
Abortion once only discussed in the privacy of your own homes, behind closed doors or in secrecy has been brought to the forefront and has become an open forum for government officials, pro-life and pro-choice organizations. The topic of abortion in America has become very high strung among various religious groups and pro-life organizations protesting against abortion, questioning the fourteenth amendment and the idea of personhood. The fourteenth amendment states that "...neither the U.S. nor any state shall deny a citizen life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness..." Yet, the most controversial issue of the abortion debate is whether or not the fetus is seen as a person. If the fetus is seen as a “person/citizen” then they are entitled to individual inalienable rights given to us and bound by the Constitution. Furthermore, if the court recognizes that the fetus is in fact a person/citizen then their inalienable constitutional rights have to be addressed. When deciphering between the legality abortion and the rights of the fetal citizen, what is the responsibility of the physicians and clinics to deter abortions; and should physicians be required to provide 4-D ultrasounds to their patients electing voluntary abortions? The answer to these questions are simple, abortion clinics and physicians need to be required to provide 4-D ultrasounds to patients electing voluntary termination to deter abortions. In this paper, I will define personhood, the fourteenth amendment and it relationship to abortion, as well as, the requirements of clinics and physicians offering abortion. Hopefully, by the end of this paper you will understand what personhood is and what it means personally to me, as well as understand the new age arm’s reach ...
In the story, “The Two Flags”, two countries were both rivals against each other and there were many components as to why they are rivals. The theme that will be elaborated is, "War". War is an action or process where a minimum of two participants are a part of which may involve differences, and a lack of agreement in an area. The same goes for the story, "The Two Flags", because there is a war going on. The war is not physical, but more verbal and emotional. In "The Two Flags", citizens from either country are educated to dislike the other country, whether the country is Lantania or Gunduwia. Students in classrooms are taught to hate the opposing country at an early age. In extreme cases, people even dislike the colors of the other country.
According to Kenneth W. Krause, “abortion might be the most inscrutable cultural issue of our time.” As a result of this enduring controversy, two opposing groups emerged: those who feel that abortion should be illegalized, the “pro-life” side, and those who believe that even though it may be an undesirable practice, abortion must remain legal, the “pro-choice” side. With research supported by science and ethics, it is evident that abortion is a “necessary evil” (Williams). The legalization of abortion provides protection of a woman’s right to control her own body, supports the prevention of risky, illegal abortions, and ensures that there will always be a choice concerning the immense, life-long responsibility that accompanies bringing a child into the world.
Prayer flags have a long history, have multiple types and meanings, and are very symbolic.
Is it wrong for a women, or anyone for that matter, to be forced into doing something they don’t want? Abortion? Getting married? To quit smoking? Would you force something like this on someone? In the country of China, women, as well as men are forced into only having one child per family because of their “One child Policy” to keep from the population rising too high. If women don’t respect this policy, and become pregnant with a second child, they are physically forced to get an abortion, and even in some circumstances, abandon their child. For this paper, I will be arguing against the topic, for I feel that this policy goes against the human rights. I feel that we as people, are able to have and provide for more than one child, then we
