Holmes and Holmes developed this typology based on various characteristics of the crime scenes and the victims themselves of 110 interviews of selected offenders and serial murders (Canter & Wentink, 2004). David Canter and Natalia Wentink conducted an empirical test of this typology and developed several criticisms to their work. Their empirical test concluded that the features described for each category tend to co-occur within each other. For example, the characteristics of a lust killer include a controlled crime scene, evidence of torture, the body being moved, a specific type of victim, no weapon left at the crime scene, and rape; all of these features are also included for the thrill killer. This makes it difficult to categorize these
How important is the theme of justice in Frankenstein. Refer closely to the creation scene and Justine's trial scene. Justice is defined as justice is the administration of law; especially : the establishment or determination of rights according to the rules of law or equity which can be interpreted as adhering to laws of both a natural and civilised level. In Frankenstein many of the fundamental laws of both humanity and the world we live in are broken. Creation in he Christian faith is a marvel that only one being or person has the right to control.
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 22nd May 1859. He attended Edinburgh University and graduated with a degree in medicine, in 1881. He then practised as a doctor from 1882-1891, but not very successfully. Whilst practising as a doctor, in 1887, he published his first short story featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, “A study in Scarlet”. The Strand magazine, founded in 1890, published a series of Sherlock Holmes stories, this let both the detective and the magazine becoming extremely popular. My essay will be based upon how Doyle creates suspense in the following three short stories; “Silver Blaze”, “The Red-Headed League” and “A Scandal in Bohemia”, and I will be commenting on what impact it may have on the readers.
Authors have the choice of expository, descriptive, narrative, or persuasive when writing. Even though, they are different, they all have one thing in common, the author writes about it for a reason. Whether it’s for themselves or someone else the author has a strong feeling behind what they write and they want to share it. When an author chooses to write in persuasive writing the goal is to make the reader see what they see or to at least make them look at the point in a different way. When writing about broader subjects there are more possibilities people are going to have different ideas, so in The Myth of Justice there are multiple ways someone could look upon it. Personally I found the piece quite ineffective in style and content.
Entering the office and showing Holmes and Watson an 18th century manuscript, Dr. James Mortimer tells the myth of Hugo Baskerville. Hugo captured and imprisoned a young country girl at his estate in Devonshire. He then became the victim of a hound of hell as he chased her along the lonesome moors late one night. Ever since that day, James Mortimer reports, the Baskerville family has been haunted by a mysterious and supernatural black hound. The recent death of Sir Charles Baskerville has brought back suspicions and fears. The next of kin, Holmes and Watson find out, has arrived in London to take up his post at Baskerville Hall, but he has already been intimidated by an anonymous warning note and the theft of a shoe.
Comment on the way Conan Doyle uses the character of Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles.
“I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing... I was born with the evil one standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since.” (Holmes) The quote above will give you a better understanding about the personality of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes (actually born Herman Mudgett in New Hampshire in 1861); one of the first documented serial killers in the United States of America and maybe the worst.
