In 1878, he took his degree as Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and he progressed through the course that was prescribed for surgeons in the army. After his studies were complete, he was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. While in combat,"he was struck on the shoulder by a Jezail bullet, which shattered the bone and grazed the subclavian artery."
