With ‘90s Dungeons and Dragons references in abundance, Qui Nguyen’s She Kills Monsters shows that there’s nothing wrong with being yourself. Inside Dallas’s Theatre Three, directors Katy Tye and Jeffrey Schmidt present a truly astounding performance of Nguyen’s play, spotlighted by fabulous acting, immersive special effects, and intricate costume design. Agnes Evans (Bree Redmond) likes all things “normal”. Her younger sister Tilly (Kennedy Waterman), on the other hand, has geekier tastes. But one day, Agnes’s life takes a turn when Tilly dies in a car accident. Seeking closure, she finds a homemade Dungeons and Dragons quest, and hoping to better understand her sister’s seemingly odd hobbies, Agnes decides to play. With the help of Chuck (Griffin Hammel) — who narrates the quest — Agnes becomes a part of the game, fighting monsters with her sister’s in-game warrior persona Tillius the Paladin. Gradually, as if opening a diary to her sister’s life, Agnes …show more content…
Most notably, Bree Redmond plays Agnes with incredible realism, which makes her character easier to relate to since it makes her and the story seem less fabricated. For instance, when Agnes first learns of her sister’s homosexuality, she sits down to talk with Tilly. Through her facial expressions especially, Redmond convincingly portrays Agnes’s regret of not knowing such a major part of her sister’s life sooner — emphasizing how Agnes wishes that she’d done more while her sister was still alive. At the same time in the scene, Kennedy Waterman (Tilly) complements Redmond’s strong performance with an equally passionate acting display of her own. Together, the two actors speak naturally and change their inflection and body language to effectively portray their roles. The solid acting also adds to the authenticity of the characters’ relationship as sisters. All in all, a heartfelt performance surfaces as a result of the phenomenal
The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.
Ray and Lori Jean had experienced some of the same abusive pain in their lives as children. The difference was that Lori Jean had someone who loved her and taught her early on about life and faith. Mee-Maw was respected by all the character’s in the book. I thought this to be of true Southern significance. Mee-Maw’s role was so great that when she died Ray took advantage of her death. Her death opened the door for him to move in, take her money, verbal and physical abuse of Lori Jean and her mother. Not only did her grandma, Mee-Maw, teach her about life and faith, she also taught her about wisdom and strength. Mee-Maw was such a great influence on Lori Jean. I believed, while reading the novel, that when Mee-Maw died, she left
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be great is to be misunderstood”. That is the quote I was pondering during the opening scene of She Kills Monsters when the narrator introduced the main characters Tilly and Agnes Evans. Agnes was described as average in all aspects of her life while her younger sister Tilly was a world class computer gamer while as being considered weird by most of her peers. But after Agnes wishes for her life not to be normal her family got involved in a car accident. Tilly and her parents died and Agnes was left with a changed life and few memories of her sister that she barely even knew. While Agnes was cleaning her sisters room she found her sister’s journal and her curiosity compelled her to find out more about her and the computer game she always uses to play. This decision leads her play the game that takes on an adventure where she discovers a lot about herself and develops what she feels is an actually relationship with her sister. During this adventure of a play many themes were explored but the main two that had the strongest presence were how your sexual orientation affects people in society, and how strong regret is as an emotion. Overall I was shocked on how beautifully the play was executed from the unexpected comedy, the bold costume designs, and talking about issues that are very relevant in our lives today.
The play Kamau by Alani Apio exhibits a very strong example of the dramatic difference between the ways that local and non-local people view the value of land. The main character Alika is much attached to the land that his family has lived on for years, as the land that they’ve lived on has become their undeniable home. Alika works for a tour company that takes tourists around the island and gives a brief history of things that have happened on the island. However, Alika’s boss, Jim, is employed at a company that has just bought the land that Alika and his family live on and this company plans to build a resort in place of Alika’s home. The land in question has two very different meanings to two very different people. The struggle and
Chinatown is classified as a neo-noir, mystery film directed by Roman Polanski, the leading female Mrs Evelyn Mulwray influences the events of the film as a femme fatale starting in her first appearance after being sought out by Gillies, the private investigator hired by a Mulwray impersonator. Through the feminist lens, depiction of the neo-noir non-predictable femme fatale can be seen. I will discuss the relationship between father and daughter and how women seemed to be treated in this film and how the relationship between the men and women is portrayed.
Throughout the play She Kills Monsters, different feelings and opinions arose. Primarily, it was not appealing to my taste of genres, and I couldn’t care less about what appeared to be a nerdy play, additionally it made me feel puzzled. Secondly, the play was entertaining and humorous. Lastly, the role-playing of the characters in this world of fantasy was amusing and enlightening. Although the play’s genre was fantasy and adventure, I speculated that it illustrated important values that we should incorporate in our lives.
Tama Dieudonne Prof: Brand ENC-1102 3 March 2018 Characterization of Sylvia "I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act." Stated Bill Gates, a business magnate and philanthropist. I selected this quote by the fact that sometimes we do not see the problem until someone show it to us, and we will look forward to resolving it.
Their acting chops were very impressive whether it was comedic, emotional, or just stunning overall. Yet, on the other hand, some minor characters weren’t as well heard as others. I feel as the play could be better if some of the minor characters had projected their voice more, allowing their character to be known. However, although some voices were much stronger than others, all actors were full of talent, capable of dealing with script’s requirements, and did a good job
The selection series are set in the future where there is a monarchy. Every time a prince is eligible to marry there would be a contest called the selection. In previous books the reader would have found out that America Singer gets picked for the selection, and soon falls for Prince Maxon. Even though America’s life has changed completely at the castle, she is still independent and outspoken. America frequently struggles to control her words and actions, and she gets into trouble often.
of Father Damien, a persona that she inhabited for the rest of her life. Therefore, Agnes
First of all, the pace of this movie was distinguished from normal American movies whose plots are usually compact. The story was developed so unhurriedly and quietly that every subtle plots of the movie, such as complex emotion change and conversation, were enlarged clearly. Secondly, the fantastic performance of both two main characters enhanced the beauty of this romantic
Their chemistry and timing is perfect in the scene, and their seamless delivery is much appreciated by the audience. By playing the parts perfectly with natural ease, the actors and
Besides the fact that I didn't like this play, the actors did do a pretty good job with their acting and memorization of their lines. Couple times Marisol hesitated with her lines but it wasn't too bad. I like the accents they were using. It wasn't to hard to understand what they were saying, but once again there were those times when their accents did effect a little on their pronunciations and my understanding on what they were saying. Overall, I don't think they were too believable with their characters. They didn't reach me.
They are so good they have you fooled to think that their character’s personality is really their own, and maybe it is. For example; Drew Barrymore puts life into her character Danielle. Just like Dougray Scott does to his character. The one actress, in my opinion, that no other actress could do it as marvelous is Angelica Hutson she really does an amazingly great job! Even though this movie would be classified as a romance movie, some humor and action is also included into the scenes as well.
