The Difference Between Shakespeare's World and Our Own

You are in the theater watching a play you have never seen before. Have you ever wondered how theater was in the past? Theater used to be very different from the plays and musicals you see today. During the world of Shakespeare, there were many different elements that made up the theater. Just like today, Shakespeare's world was made up of audiences, actors, and singing. However, the characteristics of those elements were much different in the past.

In the article titled "Actors in Shakespeare's Day" by Shephanie Chidester we read, "If players were to be legally retained by noblemen, they had to prove they could act, and one means of demonstrating their legitimacy was playing at court for Queen Elizabeth." This shows that the actors were different because they had to get permission from the Queen in order to act. Now days we have critics, but they don't usually stop you from acting all together. You can still be an actor if it is your passion. The actors of Shakespeare's days were much different than today.

A final difference between Shakespeare's world and modern times is what type of people sand or played music. According to the article called "A Nest of Singing Birds," by The Shakespearian Company, "An educated person of the time was expected to perform music more than just fairly well." Conversely, nowadays anyone can sing or play music even if they are not fully educated. If their passion is to sing or play music, they can still do that today even without full education.
