For most American’s their Tuesday morning on September 11, 2001 started off like any other week day. Families were doing their normal routine taking their children to school and heading off to work within hours may people would be participating in un- thought of duties. No one had any idea that by the end of the day what seemed like a normal Tuesday would forever be remembered in American history. Within minutes of 8:46 AM all Americans would know that this was not a normal Tuesday. This day would hold not one, but four attempted terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda on the United States. Two attacks on the World Trade Center, one attack on the Pentagon, and a failed attempt on the White House.
The first attack was at 8:46 AM ET on the north tower of the World Trade Center. The tower was struck by American Airlines Flight 11 which was in flight to Los Angeles. There were five hijackers aboard Flight 11. The five hijackers aboard Flight 11 were Al Sugami, Safam M. A., Alomari, Abdulaziz, Alshehri, Wail M., Alshehri, Waleed M., and Atta, Mohamed.
The second attack was at 9:03 AM ET on the south tower of the World Trade Center. This tower was struck by United Airlines Flight 175 which was in flight to Los Angeles. There was also five hijackers aboard Flight 175. The five hijackers aboard Flight 175 were Alghamdi, Ahmed, Alghamdi, Hamza, Alshehri, Marwan, Alshehri, Mohand, and Banihammad, Fayez Rashid.
Within in minutes of the first attack news people and all emergency personnel were on the scene trying to help evacuate the building and get medical treatment to those injured. At 10:28 AM ET the north tower of the World Trade Center collapses. Terri Tobin remembers this:
….another whole group of people came running past us saying, “The other tower is coming down! Run!” (Tobin 202)
There were a total of 2,948 lives that were lost but will never be forgotten. Even though the some people did survive, they will never live the same lives again. Some people would only live small lives after the attack and end up dying from sickness caused by inhaling the debris from the collapse of the towers. The Department of Homeland Security is formed as a response to the attacks. The place where the towers once stood is now a memorial. The field where Flight 93 crashed is now owned by the National Park Service and also turned into a memorial site.
