At first, I did not know who I wanted to do my case study on. All I knew was that I wanted to talk about a Hispanic/Latino politician that I did not know so well. I picked Senator Rubio right away because I heard about him in most of my political science classes, but never had that curiosity to do some research about him. I had so much trouble from the beginning to the end of this assignment connecting with Senator Rubio. At the end of treatment, a recommendation by Dr. Davenport will be submitted to Antwone’s commanding officer, for the purpose of determining reinstatement to active duty. Antwone sees no need for evaluation and states that the cause of physical assault was a result of racial remarks by the victim. The course, Chicano Studies 50, introduced me to many topics that I never was taught in high school. The differences between high school and college is that in college students are available to many courses and recourses to further develop their knowledge in their culture. According to Aristotle, a speaker could frame any debate using three approaches: an appeal to logic, an appeal from credibility, or an appeal to emotions. All speakers and writers use the tripartite approach to rhetoric in varying degrees and ultimately the audience judges their effectiveness in the context presented. In America, few topics are as hotly debated as that of undocumented migration, and it can be difficult to pick through the partisan and often vitriolic rhetoric in order to come to a rational conclusion. Politicians frame the debate using elements of the American mythos. While the evidence they present to back their conclusions may be factual, it necessarily omits the full truth in order to present a partisan political front. As such, politicians predominantly rely on the reader or listener’s emotional satisfaction. And even the most scrupulous journalists—meant to impart objective fact to the public—are not free from personal bias, making the discourse even more convoluted. In analyzing three prominent voices in the immigration debate, US president Obama, journalist Sonia Nazario, and Arizona congressman J.D. Hayworth, we can evaluate the effectiveness of the different rhetorical approaches by whether or not they reach their intended audiences. Nazario fulfills her journalistic raison d’être by succeeding at objectivity, while Obama and Hayworth as politicians succeed by lying by omission in speeches and in writing in order to pursue policy goals and appease supporters.
Jeff Sessions and his speech can be broken down to a sociological perspective with the elements of a moral panic. Sessions would a represent the Politico-Moral Entrepreneur element in a moral panic. He is a political figure with a lot of background knowledge of security. So when he speaks about undocumented immigrants committing these crimes, the audience will believe it. The "Linking behavior to a Dangerous element" element is also relevant Sessions links these crimes, drug trafficking, and sexual assaults to the undocumented population. In this project we were to utilize the technique of rhetoric and find real life examples of such uses. We have written and covered many examples of rhetoric but haven’t been appealed by any form of real life examples. By doing this project we were able to understand the uses of rhetoric in the real world and the unique ways it can be utilized, from fictional movies to political candidates. The genre l choose to find rhetoric was through “Rise in Notoriety”, which covers the rhetoric used from political candidates running for this year's election.
Ted Cruz is a junior Republican Senator form the state of Texas, since 2013; taking office on January 3rd, 2013. Before he would become senator he would be working for a private law firm representing corporate clients (Eckholm, 2012). He would go on to run for Senator in the state of Texas and win, which the “Washington Post” would call his win the biggest upset of the 2012 elections. Coming form a very republican state such a Texas means that his stance on issue would be very involved with that of the Republican Party. Pro-life, traditional marriages between one man and one woman, and a very heavy supporter of gun rights, he votes strictly along party lines. Also, he would not be afraid to flex his muscles out on the floor, and would threaten to filibuster any gun control legislation that would come up (Lengell, 2013). The threat to filibuster any gun control measure covers any effort such as any ID or background checks as well. Along with his stance on many of the top issues facing the country today, he was selected to on a nationwide tour in an effort to defund the Affordable Care Act dubbed “Obama Care”, and would go on to state that the government shutdown would not be a disaster to the republican party or America (Burns, 2013). Cruz would be one of the individuals that would be credited for the 2013 government shutdown.

Why I chose the topic Johnny Reeves is the best witness because he has seen and experienced the most in this story. I picked this because Johnny has been in the Klan, experienced life out of the Klan, and has been persecuted by the Klan. At first, I had a hard time decided on where in Los Angeles to go and observe for this assignment. There were a lot of great choices because Los Angeles is very diverse city. As the due date of this paper was getting closer, I got an invite from one of my friends to the Cinco De Mayo party that is being thrown by his parents. At first, I was hesitant to say yes, but then I thought about how this would be a great opportunity for my assignment. So I said yes to my friend’s invitation. I’ve never been to a Cinco De Mayo party before so I didn’t know what to expect or what the dress code is.
One of the readings we had relates to the same concept of not identifying who the Latinos really are. This reading is called, “For Young Latino Readers, an Image is Missing” by Motoko Rich. In this article, Rich is showing how no one relates to the real life problems they are going through as Latinos and they are stereotyped for something they are not. The balance of trying to contradict a double identity is hard to be found when people believe things that are not true.
My solution was to go onto Discus and go to opposing view point and find the first subject I wanted to know more about. I settled on the legalization of marijuana because it is controversial and timely. On Discus, there was a wealth of information for and against my argument. I found every resource I needed on discus and then I looked into the background of the authors of these articles to determine weather or not it could be trusted. With the help of Ms. Florence, and my annotated bibliography, I was able to create a catalog of the articles I read, wether or not they could be trusted, and the main ideas of the articles. With all of these resources my research paper was easily put
With the upcoming elections, personal politics are becoming a popular topic for conversation. I do not know what my earliest memory of politics was, I feel like I grew up with them my entire life. My parents encouraged understanding of political issues in order to pick a stance when it came to them. My parents have also supported my political views even the ones that do not match their own. I have been registered to the independent party for six years now, because I was never sure where I fell between the democrats and the republicans.
