Selfishness Is Wrong Analysis

There are certain things that everyone seems to agree upon, selfishness is frowned upon in society, whereas selflessness is applauded, everyone agrees that murder is wrong, and that stealing things is wrong. “Think of a country where people were admired for running away in battle, or where a man felt proud of double-crossing all the people who had been kindest to him.

You might just as well try to imagine a country where two and two made five. Men have differed as regards what people you ought to be unselfish to—whether it was only your own family, or your fellow countrymen, or everyone. But they have always agreed that you ought not to put yourself first. Selfishness has never been admired.” (Lewis) Now, whether or not people choose to follow

People who will be completely selfish, and go back on their word, or break their promises to you, but as soon as you try doing this back to them, they claim that ‘it isn’t fair’ and try to play to the rules of morality. So they do believe in morality, they just won’t admit to it so they don’t have to feel guilty when they break it, but they are offended when other people don’t follow the moral code, especially if it is in a way that hurts

Many people would say that society progresses and becomes more accepting as a whole, but this is not what history has shown. A good example of this would be WWII era Germany. Hitler slowly fed ideas into the minds of German citizens and convinced them that Jews were barely human, if they were even human at all, and that Jews were worth less than everyone else and that what he was doing was for the good of the world. He was trying to create the “perfect” Aryan race and kill anyone who didn’t fit his standard of perfection. He convinced many people that what he was doing was right and so they let him get away with it. The same sort of thing is happening today. Media has convinced people that the lives of the unborn do not matter unless they are wanted by their mothers. They have used the same strategies that Hitler used to dehumanize the Jews, and people are falling for it and actively fighting for the right to end the lives of children while they are defenseless in the womb. Even when science proved that life begins at conception the world today refuses to believe the facts and clings tightly to the lies because they want an excuse to make life easier on themselves. And this, these horrible atrocities, are what happens when we think of morals as relative and pick and choose what rules we want to follow and leave the rest
