The love story “The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare provides evidence that many teenagers have self confidence issues. The young couple of Romeo and Juliet are no exception to this matter. Many times you hear Romeo say he is not worthy of Juliet and many times Juliet resorts to lies than to be confident and tell the truth. Peer pressure corresponds with self confidence and is also a greatly influential part of the tragedy. A teenager’s self confidence level either makes it easier to be honest or to be deceitful. Romeo’s self confidence is not great as is seen in the play when he says “{He} {is} a feared, being in night, all this is but a dream, too flattering-sweet to be substantial” (2.2.145-147). He doesn’t think he is good enough for Juliet. His self confidence is so nonexistent that he doesn’t even think that it could be realistic for him to be with someone like Juliet. Within Act Two Romeo is pressured by Mercutio Mercucio to believe that love is hopeless and dreams are for fools. In relation to this as teenage brains begin to mature they tend to be vulnerable to the influence of peer pressure, rather than what they have been taught by their parents. In “Teenage Brains” David Dobbs says, “ Teens may choose to hang out with peers, but structured interactions with parents and other adults are also crucial.” In other words teens would rather spend time with peers. The more time they spend with peers the more susceptible they are to forget what their parents want, and they fall victim to peer pressure because their self confidence is not as strong as it should
