“When you interrupt a girl’s school day to force her to change clothes, or send her home because her shoulders are showing, you are telling her that making sure boys have a ‘distraction free’ learning environment is more important than her education. Instead of shaming girls for their bodies, teach boys to not view girls as objects” (anonymous internet user). School dress codes have been a hot topic in the news lately. Girls have been sent home for wearing things they thought followed the dress code, but, apparently, their teachers did not. Students at Wisconsin Lutheran High School (WLHS) should be able to wear what they want because all the students should have the right to express themselves, be comfortable in their learning environment, …show more content…

For example, if WLHS changes the dress code to allow sweatpants or athletic pants, people might try to wear pajamas too. This could cause more issues for the administration because people could start to find loopholes in this rule. However, students should have the right to express themselves. Many times, the dress code rules prohibit that from happening. If students try to express themselves, usually a teacher shuts down the creative thinking going on (Lindsay). For example, if someone tries to wear a long shirt over top of leggings and even if it reaches fingertip length, the teacher will most likely make the student change and give the student a detention. Moreover, students should be able to be comfortable during the school day. Since students spend their childhood in a school setting, they should be able to be comfortable where they spend most of their time. In the beginning of the school year, it is usually warm outside and some of the classrooms can be a little warm. Contrary to popular belief, shoulders are not scandalous. This is where the dress code could allow students to wear tank tops. One of the reasons this could be frowned upon is because of the variety of tank tops there are. Parameters like no spaghetti straps or straps that are at least two finger widths wide could be communicated to ensure modesty. Another example of making the dress code more comfortable is by allowing sweatpants and athletic shorts. These can make the dress code way more comfortable because people would have more clothing options available to
