Among of vast history and accomplishments, the name Sam Houston will appear. Sam Houston was a man of great achievements. All the way from being a people person, to the battlefield, Houston was loved by many. Fighting in battles, being a government figure, and friend to many, Sam Houston will be remembered. Sam Houston was and will continue to be a man of history.
Sam Houston was a man of the people. Houston grew up with a big family, until the death of his father. After the death of his father, him along with his family, moved to East Tennessee. He grew up beside a Cherokee tribe where Sam Houston spent a lot of his time. The tribe later adopted Houston and took him in as their own. Sam Houston was given a new name, “The Raven”. Not many men have the courage to risk their lives for a country. Sam Houston was a man of great courage and spirit. Houston never gave up when times were tough. The first battle Houston fought in was the battle of Horseshoe Bend. At least 800 Creeks were killed, while very few Americans were killed. The battle of Horseshoe Bend took place in the Mississippi Territory in 1812. Houston fought alongside General Andrew
Jackson where they won the battle. Houston was injured pretty heavily, but that did not dull his spirit. Sam Houston was not the type of guy to give up. “But being a young man of fierce and indomitable spirit, Houston rallied from his several injuries, although many thought that he would not.” (Harper xiii). After seeing three different doctors in three different states, Houston was ready to fight again. Soon after Houston was promoted to second lieutenant after he finished healing, and in 1918 Houston was promoted to first lieutenant. The next battle Houston fought in was between Mexico and Texas. The Mexican-American war was fought between 1946-1948. Mexico did not want to give control of Texas over to the Americans. Houston was named commander of this battle.
