Body language is a fundamental part of courtship because it reveals how available, attractive, ready, enthusiastic, sexy or desperate we are. While some courtship signals are studied and deliberate, others are completely unconscious. It is still unclear how we learn these signals but research now shows that many may be inborn. Sexual attraction is a topic that I am fascinated about. It’s the basis of sexual desire, quality of arousal and the appeal to attract someone or something’s attention. For centuries humans have changed the way they try to draw their potential mate toward them and I for one, love how dance has opened up a new platform for one to display their feelings towards their chosen mate. The constant contact that is maintained with the floor, the center of gravity that is maintained at the same height from the floor, throughout the dance and how the knees are slightly flexed at all times, acting as addition control points, increasing step-size and drive power, absorbing the extra height gain should the dancers need to go on their toes. Salsa is more of an open dance, in that the couple doesn’t embrace, instead they hold one or both hands, changing often. It's a non-travelling dance - they don't travel around the floor, they dance in one spot, swapping back and forth, doing turns and spins. In Salsa the man leads and creates space for the woman to move her body. I chose a specific routine in Salsa from the World Salsa Championships in 2007 and analyzed it using LMA. The movement of their bodies was mesmerizing. Whatever the male dancer did, the female followed in such precise synchronization. The male initiated each movement and directed the female. Both their movements were simultaneous and occurred at the same time in tune with one another. Her hips were a live and did not harm or distract the movement. As the male dancer twirled the female around, he would whip her around so fast that the final movement of her arm stretched out seemed effortless yet dramatic. They were both very light on their feet and used the flex of their knees to drive in a different direction. Focusing on the type of effort the dancers portrayed was hard to define due to the diverse movements they incorporated into their performance. I would say their timing was effortless! Such quick and direct movements were the cause of such beautiful and sustained dancing. Their shapes didn’t change dramatically throughout the performance. They stay very upright yet flexible and relaxed in the shoulders.
