Every dance that is created by a choreographer has a meaning and or purpose behind it. The dance choreographed could be used to send a political, emotional, or a social message. Regardless of the message being sent, each dance created possesses a unique cultural and human significance. This essay will examine and analyze two dance works from history and give an insight into what each dance work provided to the society of its time. “La Fille Mal Gardee” was a comic ballet choreographed by Jean Deuberval, and premiered in Bordeaux, France on July 1st, 1789. The ballet was a Ballet d’ action, and was very important because it was the first ballet choreographed to be about regular citizens, and not just about the monarchy. “La Fille Mal Gardee” was influential in that it was the first ballet about everyday people, and was also an indirect reflection of the revolutionary path that citizens were starting to take against the rich and the monarchy in France before the actual French Revolution occurred. Likewise, “Hexentanz’ was influential because it was a dance that allowed for the expression of how the choreographer was feeling toward the world to be shown, and in the time that the piece was filmed it served as a critique on Germany’s infamous political Nazi party takeover. Although the two dance pieces are of different dance forms, they are actually very similar in that they both spoke to what was happening negatively in the world during their respective times, and spoke to the natural feelings that humans can have.
