The magnificent Catholic Church located in Tampa was built during the 1800’s and renovated in 2003 brings a unique piece of history in Hillsborough County regarding the structure and the principal that the building was made with. Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s floor plan can be compared with three different churches: The Basilica Nova (Rome), The Ancient Basilica of Constantine (Rome) and the Hagia Sophia (Instanbul).
The Catholic Church in Tampa compared to the Basilica Nova brings some similarities but also some differences. Both churches have in common the groin-vaulted nave where people can walk through during Mass celebration and have an apse down by the altar. They both have barrel vaulted bays on the side of church but the Basilica Nova
Currently, the outside of the church stands with bricks that originated from Huntingburg, Indiana and then shipped to Mentor, Indiana (Welp 1; Striegel 13). The second church laid its cornerstone on June 21, 1914. The church appointed Louis Wessbecher as the architect. The church assigned Bernard Tonnies, from eastern St. Louis, to become the contractor. For all the materials and labor, the grand total cost of the church would come out of twenty-five thousand dollars. (Striegel 14) The height and length of the church measured sixty feet wide and one hundred and twenty-six feet long. At the top of a one hundred and twenty- five feet tower, a seventeen foot gilded cross stood. The capacity of the church can hold up to seven hundred fifty people. (“Schnellville 1” 13) Sacred Heart secured its completion in October of 1916 (“Schnellville 2” 15). The original frame structure stood until replaced by the present brick and limestone in 1916. Acclaimed on Easter Sunday of 1916, the first mass began. (“Schnellville 3” 12) From 1950 to 1952 Reverend Lawrence Moll became the pastor of Schnellville and the youth honestly adored him. After Reverend Lawrence Moll retired, immediately, Reverend Francis Mellen, ordained on June 10, 1919, became pastor from 1952 to 1953. When choosing a religious service I was very limited on my choices so I was intrigued to go back to my roots and try the Catholic denomination. This denomination is the one that is most prevalent in my community and also in my social circle as well. Since I have actually been to a Catholic church as a child I thought I knew what to expect but I was shocked at how naive I was to the subject. My preconceived ideas and thoughts were that there would be a lot of getting down on your knees then back up again then saying your Hail Mary’s with not much depth to a service. Also growing up with a social group that was full of Catholics you would always hear of confession so that was something I was particularly dreading for the fact that I did not quite understand the concept and believe in it. This did not take place however which was a sigh of relief on my part cause I was not ready for that big of a leap from my own comfort zone.
When entering the Basilica one intakes the view of the catenary arches with light figures hanging down above them as well as beautiful Main Alter with the original paintings and statuary. The first thing at the door of the Basilica is a large black that holds the holy are. On the left there is a gothic style baptisrty The walls of the Basilica are white with several paintings hanging from them. On the right midway though the Basilica stand the Christ of King Shrine against the wall. On the left side midway though the Basilica the entryway to the chapel in which has the “Our Lady Bethlehem Shine”. The Our Lady Bethlehem Shrine is very important to the mission because, “thousands of pilgrims come every year and pray tour Lord through her intercessions.” At the foot of the alter the gave is Junipero Serra is placed, making this Basilica so significant. To the right of the alter there is a glass in casement with the relics of the coffin of blessed Fray Junipero Serra. “The pieces of the original casket which fallen to decay were set aside for safekeeping and now exhibited here in the reliquary.” The exit of the Basilica is on the left hand site at the very front near the alter. Ziggy Marley once said, “God is like the sun. When the sun shines, it shines for everyone. God is for everyone.” In the same way, Abbot Suger built the Basilica of St. Denis so that sunlight would flood throughout the building and symbolize the power of God inviting visitors into the cathedral. The Basilica of St. Denis was an artistic response to the rise of the Catholic Church’s power for it was modeled to be a physical representation of heaven, which the church heavily preached upon. (Thesis) As the basilica represented the shift from Romanesque architecture to Gothic, Abbot Suger introduced new techniques that transformed cathedrals to look more spacious and “heavenly”. (Map Statement #1-Art History) By allowing sunlight to come through the large windows, Abbot Suger instilled the Neo-Platonic idea that the sun was the physical representation of God. (Map Statement #2 –Philosophy) Also, at that time, the church was rising in power, so the new structural style of the basilica brought more converts and eventually more power to the church. Comparison of the Roman Catholic Church and the United Reformed Church All Christian denominations celebrate Holy Communion in some form, although how they do this varies. The two I have chosen to compare are the Roman Catholic Church and the United Reformed Church. In the Roman Catholic Church the act of worship is called Mass. Catholics are expected to attend Mass. Only those who have been Christened and then later confirmed can receive Holy Communion. The Mass consists of six parts as follows : The Foremass consists of the entrance, procession, and chant, which are then followed by the confession, which includes a litany ( Kyrie eleison) and ends with the Gloria.

Rome is the home of one of the largest cathedrals in the world, St. Peter's; however, it is also the home of many other beautiful churches and basilicas. Some of these include basilicas such as: Santa Maria Maggiore, St. Giovanni in Lateran, and St. Peter in Chains and churches like St. Peter Outside the Walls and San Giuseppe del Falegnami/ Mamertine Prison. These churches and basilicas through their history, art, architecture, and relics or tombs of saints create a rich and intriguing history of ancient Rome.
On Sunday March 12th and 19th, my husband and I attended Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (HTSN) in Finneytown, Ohio. The church conducts Orthros (Matins) at 8:15 am and Divine Liturgy from 9:30-11:30 am. I chose to attend HTSN for two reasons; first, they host the annual Panegyri Festival and two, learning about the 1054 split intrigued me given the current state of the Methodist Church.

There are many different images that people associate the church with. Most of these images are based on a time period, whether it’s a time of suffering or a time of triumph.
The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ was the name of the church I attended during the last couple of weeks. It was my friends’ church that was located in Brazil, Indiana. It was a fairly small church compared to other churches I have been to. It was a primarily black church with a few other races that attended also. This church had a guy drumming during every song that was song. I found this church to be very different from the ones we discussed in class.
