SLC Punk Analysis

“We were just a couple of young punks.” SLC Punk is a incredibly well written, iconic film. SLC Punk is full of contradictions that all young minds have to face, the inevitability of conformity, and growing up in todays society. The films a journey starting out with a young punk kid doing everything possible to not fit in. At the end of the journey, you see a tale of life's highs, and lows, and just how difficult it is to be a punk, in Salt Lake City. The exellent narration, contradicitions of youth, and visual aspects, make this film an incredible view for anyone at any point in their lifes. Steveo's best friend, nick named Heroin Bob, is in-fact self contradicting. Heroin Bob, being the only one of the group, who refuses all drugs, and can't stand needles. In an artful way, the director James Merendino, is able to grasp the mind of adolescence and allow the viewer to see the growth in the mind of Steveo. Throughout the film Steveo wants nothing more than to be anti-establishment, rebelling against everyone and everything. The character claims that, “Only posers fall in love.” and “Only posers die.” Both being spoken through pivotal points within the film. Nothing is worse for Steveos character than the idea of conformity, and the idea of being a “poser”. As the film progresses you see all these opinions collapse before him. All the contradictions, and idiocy of youth, fading throughout major life events. While rebellion, and anarchy, sound inspirational, Steveo eventually comes to a major conclusion, “We can do a hell of a lot more damage in the system than outside of it.” This statement focuses on the ending scene, concluding on a well groomed, clean cut Steveo, sitting outside of law school. Steveo finds that all to hard concept, while we can all pretend to warriors for the weird, and different, holding great opinions on government, and establishments.
