Lawrence Technological University Founded in 1932 by Russell E. Lawrence, Lawrence Technological University or LTU, began in Highland Park, Michigan, but moved to its current located in Southfield in 1955. The private school is located on more than 100 acres near Detroit. LTC is the first completely wireless college campus in Michigan. It provides all students with a tablet or laptop, as well as software. The campus boasts many facilities to support student learning, especially the Center for Innovating Materials Research. Inside the center, students can use a variety of labs for robotics, graphics, biomedical research, and alternative energy. There are more than 82 degree programs (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral) to choose from with architecture, mechanical engineering, and engineering technology the most popular. Most doctorate programs are in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, or STEM, fields. Students can choose to take part in the school’s Leadership Program. The program’s purpose is to nurture a student’s sense of entrepreneurialism and global perspective. Students who participate earn a leadership portfolio and their degree. Notable graduates include Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO; Donald W. Date, lead architect for the Panama Canal Compan; John DeLorean, founder of DeLorean Motors and creator of the world’s first muscle car; Ronald Knockeart, creator of keyless entries on cars and the laser bar code scanner. The school has an excellent reputation for preparing students for the workforce. About 80 percent of LTU grades are employed graduation, which is almost twice the U.S. average. Physical security is highlighted by key-card access to dorms and lighted pathways/sidewalks. There is no requirement for freshman to live on campus. There are five fraternities and four sororities on campus. Lawrence Technical competes in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), and in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) and fields teams in several sports. Student athletes compete in cross country, bowling, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball. The Blue Devil is the school’s mascot. There is a free, on-campus event ever Thursday for students and many academic clubs to join. One of the school’s homecoming traditions is hosting a free concert. Being near Detroit, there are many opportunities for music, food, and entertainment. There are five destination districts – Downtown Detroit, Dearborn/Wayne, Greater Novi, Macomb, and Oakland – each with a distinct personality.
