Rules A rule is an explicit or understood regulation or principle governing conduct within a particular activity. Everywhere you go in the world has at least one rule. In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, the society is based completely off of rules. Almost everyone follows the rules, but there are some who could care less about them, or they just simply don’t believe in them. So, why do they exist? What is their purpose? Will Equality use the same rules for his new society or will he change them? In Anthem rules exist to keep everyone equal, their purpose is to stop problems from happening, and Equality tries so hard to get away from these rules. Why do these rules exist? I believe that these rules exist because something happened in the past that
The book Anthem is a book that can be perceived many various ways. To me, Anthem is about an outstandingly smart young man, named Equality 7-2521
In Anthem there are so many rules and controls, yet there is one that truly rises above it all. And that word is “I”. There is no “I” only “We”, for the great “We” is what they follow. And they are one not individual, they are one. And poor Equality can’t seem to understand that the rules are rules, but in a way he’s making his own rules. And he is mistreated for his looks and appearance and dosen’t seem really one with his brothers. And he’s curious and most don’t even question life, and he notices the little things, “Yet as we stand at night in the great hall, removing our garments for sleep, we look upon our brothers and we wonder. The heads of our brothers are bowed. The eyes of our brothers are dull, and never do they look one another in the eyes. The shoulders of our brothers are hunched, and their muscles are drawn, as if their bodies were shrinking and wished to shrink out of sight. And a word steals into our mind, as we look upon our brothers, and that word is fear.”(Rand 46). He has a wanting to learn and build his knowledge, but the rules don’t permit his decisions.
Ayn Rand, a contentious woman, the new favorite author to multiple people’s list. People who have read her magnificent book, Anthem, understand how exquisite and meaningful her words are. Books like Anthem are worth reading because it gives the reader more knowledge about controversial topics and it takes the reader to experience new places and new adventures. Equality, the main character, is a symbol. He represents many people today, living in countries like his society. Equality has to find his true identity first before helping the others. People are not allowed to believe in individualism, they should not have a identity of their own. Each person has a monotone routine to follow every single day of their lives. Each step a person takes
People in every Society are placed in categories according to gender, religion, race, and age from which one of these categories includes social class. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, people are placed in social classes according to the government's liking and instead of race, age, gender etc their social class depends on the job they are given by the government. This was done to treat everyone equally in order to keep peace in the society. However, sometimes equality can cause rebellion and this idea is portrayed through the protagonist of the novel, Equality 7-2521. Ever since the unmentionable times had caused destruction to the society of Anthem, the government had taken away all the free will and individuality of its people.
The government’s authority over several aspects of society displays its corruption and causes more people to become conformists who lack egotism in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem. The government chooses the occupations of all of the citizens. It is the Council of Vocation’s position to decide everyone’s job, thus suppressing the right of the people to freedom of choice. The teachers, who had been appointed by the Councils, inform the students to “Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you. For the Council of Vocations knows in its great wisdom where you are needed by your brother men, better than you can know it in your unworthy little
A rule is a set of detailed regulations required to be followed in an activity or sphere. In the book Anthem, there is a variety of rules which needs to be followed. Towards the end of the book, Equality 7-2521 imagines a new world. He would not want the councils of scholars rules to be followed in his own world because he now knows the sacred word and what it means. Equality 7-2521, in his new world, would not follow the rules the council enforced in his last society to rid them of diversity because he wants people to exercise free agency, live independently, and grow up in a society.
Ensuring equality among the people promotes fairness and reduces conflict and jealousy. By treating everyone equally we maintain our respect and are able to work together better. The rule we create treats everyone the same and does not provide any special treatment to any specific person. As long as everyone does what is required of them they will obtain what is rightfully due to them.
Ayn Rand’s Anthem is the story of a man by the name of Equality 7-2521’s personal growth and quest for freedom from the rules and regulations in society, which he lived. Long ago something called the Great Rebirth happened and later all of mankind started to think of it as one “great WE”. Members of this society were expected to obey the rules; these rules are set in place to help this society function as a unit.
Anthem by Ayn Rand depicts a completely collectivist society, or one in which a person is required to give up his or her individuality for the good of the whole. The society does a lot to justify their opposition to individuality, but the main reason they do is for the idea of “ the common good”. Equality is taught to refer to himself as “we” to help enforce the idea that he is part of a whole, rather than an individual. From the beginning of the book, we know that Equality is stronger and smarter than many of his peers. So why was he sent to the House of the Street Sweepers? The society is afraid of people who are different, because they may interfere with their idea of a “perfect society”, in which everyone is the same. “And also they were not liked because they took pieces of coal and they drew pictures upon the walls, and they were pictures that made men laugh… so International 4-8818 were sent to the Home of the Street Sweepers, like ourselves. (29-30)” International 4-8818 and Equality were both assigned to the Home of the Street Sweepers because they wouldn’t conform to
These rules existed to create a society that focused on working as a whole. Rather than having individuals that acted with their own selfish reasons, everyone was forced and brainwashed to go along with what was told to
If everyone is not treated fairly and taken into consideration when making rules, members of society will be disobedience which would cause trouble in the town. The three works that we have read in class, Antigone, “Civil disobedience”, and “An Ideal for which I am prepared to die”, all show why equality is needed. Even though they are from three different time periods and places equality is something that all people are looking for. Antigone showed disobedience by burying her brother, Thoreau should disobedience by not paying his taxes and writing his essay that inspired other leaders and Mandela showed disobedience by helping create the African National Congress and sabotage to end apartheid. All three problems could have been solved with equality of the people. If equality was created for everyone, disobedience would not exist and a just society would
There were rules that everyone must follow, and if not, a curse could come. The rules were simple.
Conforming to all the rules society has placed is not important, what is important is knowing when it is okay to not follow a rule. People straying away from rules can have many possible outcomes, they are primarily as basic as making the right choice or making a mistake. Sometimes society’s rules are in the wrong, to be able to fix the problem what is needed are people who aren’t afraid to stand up to the rule.Society makes mistakes in the rules that are placed, and people have stood up to them. It is necessary to know when it is or is not okay to break a rule. It is okay to stand up to a rule if someone else is getting hurt, a group of people are being sectioned off or if the rule currently in place is endangering someone that have done

The main idea of the relationship theory is to help a person to identify a healthy versus unhealthy relationship. Rules often provide structure, which also holds the two accountable to each other. For example, if two people break up they could reflect on where they went wrong. They could also see if certain rules they placed on their relationship were broken. If there are rules, there is a better understanding between people whether it is a relationship or friendship. When there is a clear understanding, there is a stronger growth in relationship
