Rough Draft: Discourse Communiy
Graffiti is an artform, and graffiti writers are artists. Graffiti is not bound to the aesthetic or conventional practices of art. It is an artform in which the artists motive disregards arguments on legality and enables the artist to take control. Graffiti is the act of scribbling, drawing, or spray painting illicitly in a public space in order to display a name or “ tag “. It is graffiti in the way of writing a name that is stylized and done illegally.
When I was in middle school I watched the graffiti film “Style Wars”. The film documented young artists and adults in the graffiti and hip-hop scene in during the 1980s who were painting the New York

This space is regularly visited by parents and their children, students, out of towners, and amatuer to proffesional artists of various medias who enjoy the Artwork and environment. However, it is not common for there to be a space as large as castle hill dedicated as a free paint “spot” or place for a tag or painting. And indeed there were complications with this “ free” area to paint in. For example two of my friends were painting at this “spot”. As sun went down they were almost finished with their ‘throw-ups”. These are bubble style letters that are generally two colors of paint, a base and an outline. And as they were leaving two cops approached them, searched them, and arrested one of my friends for having spray paint. Because he was 17 and the legal age of owning spray paint is 18. On the whole, while graffiti is becoming more accepted and more understood among society, what constitutes as a “legal”,or wall done with permission, is still up to the individual to decide. It is an artform that will never be appropriated completely because it is graffiti, it is supposed to be …show more content…
Graffiti writers are always involved in the environment, it is their goal, to leave a mark and become a part of it. With the hope that when they come back to see it once more it will still be visible, knowing that they were there and the thrill and stories that were made are what make up some of graffities rewards. Groups of graffiti writers are referred to as “crews”. The crew works together by covering for each other while painting a spot, sharing paint, and sharing graffiti knowledge and
Graffiti or street art is considered an art form because it includes aesthetic criteria, incoherence and nonstandard presentation. Graffiti has been developing since the late 1960’s. The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human social interaction. Graffiti has been found in uncovered, ancient Egyptian monuments and graffiti was preserved on walls in Pompeii. Also, graffiti art is colorful and complex. Graffiti artists need a considerable amount of skills to complete their artwork, they need to have creativity for using spray paint. The concerns of modern graffiti art originated in New York and it was known first as New York Style Graffiti. The novel Let the Great World Spin written by Colum McCann discusses graffiti art in New
The most predominant attribute of a graffiti artist is their mindset, for a graffitist is constantly surveying the streets in search for a new spot to “bomb” as well as examining the work of fellow writers. For instance, when a graffiti artist looks at an empty wall or a distant water tower they envision a canvas suitable for displaying their graffiti. A graffiti artist uses specific terminology when speaking to fellow writers as well as average people interested in this illegal art form. The use of terms, such as “tag,” “throw-up,” and “burner” are used to describe different styles of graffiti letters. In addition, the term “bomb” is used when a graffitist paints on numerous surfaces in a given area. When analyzing the desires of a graffitist, they explain the desire to go “all-city.” The term “all-city” describes a writers’ aspiration to display his graffiti throughout the entire city. The lifestyle of a graffiti artist tends to be more active than that of an average person, for graffitist go “bombing” during late hours of the night. The reason for these late-night paint excursions is to avoid cont...
Webster defines graffiti as an inscription or drawing made on some public surface. Graffiti is often thought of as gang-related, because gangs have traditionally painted their identifying symbols in places to mark their turf.
Graffiti is an art form that was bred from the rebellion of youths. The first sighting of graffiti was seen on subways, and other impoverished areas around New York. This form involved what is called tagging , where the artist signs his or her name, nickname, or group name, on the side of a building or other surface. It is well known for its bold, colorful presence and intricate script. It is still prominent and visible in those areas of the Bronx today.

The identity of a graffiti artist is hardly ever known unless they want to tag their art with their name or a nickname. Graffiti writers as a subculture are trying to express their political views through civil disobedience by painting pictures that speak out against the government. This subculture developed because they were tired of being oppressed by the government. Graffiti is one of the most enduring acts of protest. It is an important tool for the resistance movement as a way to publicize their protest. It is a visible and powerful form of protest that is going to promote change in the social justice by allowing oppressed groups of people express their viewpoints without being penalized by the

Looking from the taggers' point of view, one can understand why taggers and graffiti artists draw and do graffiti, but this does not justify the fact that often times this form of self-expression is not acceptable when it is done on other peoples property. Having the opportunity to listen (film, class, talk show) to why taggers and graf...
“Art is anything you want it to be” it demonstrates love, desire, commitment, devotion and it shows who you are. Although graffiti is admired as an art form to some people, it is frequently seen as an undesirable trouble by others. This type of art started in the late 1960's, and it has been expanding since then. While vigorously wealthy in history, graffiti has a disputable past, present, and future that will probably carry on to be the topic of dispute. The beginning of graffiti go back to the commencement of human, social existing.
Graffiti started in the 1920s when gangs would tag train cars and walls to mark territory mainly in New York City. Graffiti took a different turn in the 1970s when young adults decided to use street art as an outlet to express their political and social outrage. This movement had soon gained the attention of the “adult” world. Graffiti was known as “creation through destruction” and to this day is still considered illegal in most parts of the world. In modern street art the mediums used have evolved past spray paint and now artists are using different methods with spray paint to progress their works past crude tags.
