You can protect your roof from developing roof rot in the first place by taking proper care of it. Here are four ways you can protect your roof from developing roof rot in the first place, especially when you live somewhere that is wet and moist.
#1 Fix Damaged Shingles Immediately

#2 Keep Chimney & Roof Vents Well Sealed
Your chimney and roof vents are another vulnerable area where roof rot can develop if you are not careful. You need to make sure that the areas around your chimney and roof vents are well sealed. This will prevent water from getting underneath your roof.
If you want to seal around your chimney and roof vents on your own, you can apply roofing tar around the base. This will keep water out. However, it is a temporary fix that you would need to repeat each year.
To really seal around these fixtures, you are going to want to replace any damaged shingles, apply silicone sealant around the bae, and add metal flashing around the base. This will keep water away from your home for the long-term.
