Imagine watching a movie that was based off of a book; one may notice that the directors have made subtle or obvious changes to the details of the story. Directors change these details in order for the movie to make sense with a different perspective than a book. Shakespeare’s play of Romeo and Juliet has been made into multiple movies. One movie that it has been made into is Romeo + Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann. There are many differences and similarities these two versions. They both contain the same characters, but the movie inserts extra details, such as the use of media, electricity, and guns, to fit with the time period that the movie is set in.

In the play, news had to be spread through people or messengers that were sent to deliver news, but in the movie, news could be spread through television and phones (Shakespeare). In Romeo and Juliet, Peter, Capulet's servant, was sent to deliver the news of the masquerade to people across the land (Shakespeare 1.2). This showed that news traveled through people in that era. At the beginning of Romeo + Juliet, a television news channel was on about the initial brawl in the street between the Capulets and Montagues, showing that news traveled through media (Luhrmann). The director changed that detail to fit the rest of the setting of the movie, which is described as being technologically advanced. In the movie’s time period, media is the most reasonable way of spreading news because having a person personally deliver messages throughout the city would not fit the rest of the setting. The director decided to change this particular detail because it relates to people in today’s day and age. His goal is to attract more people to watch his movie resulting in more income.
