In my current work place I am currently in a leadership role as an Educational Supervisor and I am constantly looking for ways to improve my management skills. Becoming a leader, however, requires that you understand the leadership role and responsibility of being an effective leader. I believe Individuals in a leadership role must strive to make better choices and decisions for the sake of others. An effective leader focuses on staff strengths while focusing on their own strengths. The fact of the matter is that strong people have far more weaknesses than they have strengths. To become a leader, you can never achieve greatness by compensating for your weaknesses, but you can become an outstanding and effective leader by identify areas of
Anyone can manage but not everyone makes a good leader. “Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent” (Clark, 2010, p. 1). As a leader, inspire your employees by being passionate yourself. Have a good attitude and smile. Know your job and know your employees jobs. Think outside the box to come up with solutions for your team.
Leadership is a skill that staff members, management and other individuals can obtain. How you use your skill will determine the success you will have in life. Reading “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle” on how to become a servant leader has influence me on so many levels. The essence of leadership stated by Mr. Hunter, should be influence and built upon serving, sacrificing, and seeking the good of those being led. Whether you are a teacher, mother or father, and in the professional world anybody can lead in the right direction.
Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. I can step up to the plate if needed and I can take control of certain situations without being told to. I love writing and being able to express my feelings or thoughts through writing and poetry. Along with my talents and skills I also have weaknesses. Knowing your weaknesses is twice as important as knowing your strengths in my opinion. One weakness of mine is being motivated. Once I start a task I will finish it and put 150% effort into it, but actually starting the task is my problem. Another weakness of mine is change. I have a problem with drastic change; I have a comfort with familiarity. With every leader there is going to be strengths and weaknesses and I think it’s very
There is a difference between managing and leading. In Managerial Roles, H. Mintzberg describes 10 roles, grouped under the categories of interpersonal, informational and decision roles, that a manager should posses. An effective leader should have those skills as well, in addition to having an overall vision, clearly communicating those goals and motivating their followers to work towards it (Wren, p.378). Leadership is also about directing change. Without change, leadership is only management of the status quo (MacNeil, Cavanagh, Silcox, p.6). There is nothing wrong with begin a successful manager, just as there is much value to be an effective follower.
With the passage of NCLB, many school reform efforts have been initiated using top-down model in which each school leaders have been charged with initiating bold administrative changes to address the legislation. With the number of leadership theories and models, researchers have become interested in studying those to determine which might bring forth the most significant results for leading such change. Due to the lack of highly qualified administrators and the increasing demands for administrators, Bush, O’Brien & Spangler (2005) studied a program, the Southern Tier Leadership Academy, a collaborative of the New York Education Department. The study included three separate cohorts who completed an eight month program. Whereas, Somech (2005) chose to investigate directive and participative leadership approaches, and which would more significantly impact school effectiveness. Perhaps Somech’s reflect Scherer’s (2009, p.7) understandings as described in Educational Leadership, ‘broom-wielding leadership can indeed be beneficial’ as is putting advocates into positions of power and influence and building teams, both of which are seemingly contrasting opposites.
5- Becoming an effective leader: to be an effective and influential leader you have to be well trained. Companies spend billions of dollars on leadership training programs so they can qualify their managers to become good leaders.
In developing my own educational leadership model (MELM) I began with establishing what I believe the goal of education should be, since leaders by definition are leading people towards something. The goal of education is to effectively teach students the essential skills and knowledge they will need to establish a productive, positive, self-sufficient life where they can be active members of their communities. An effective leader, while working towards this goal will need to consider the present conditions and demands of the environment they are a part of. In the field of education, both internal and external factors are of crucial importance when developing a plan to lead for success. However, one must note the variables in education are different than those the business sector face, for example; student performance, ability and cultural differences; availability/condition of supplies and materials; goal; educator’s capability, views and attitudes; conditionality of economic support; openness/hostility of influencing communities; state or government performance mandates. A leader who knows where they (students, school, district, community) are now, can approach goals more clearly and develop more effective strategies to arrive at them.
Many people in present day are trying to understand the concept and practice of leadership. The concept of leadership is equivalent to ensure the influence in school and manage the change and organizational structure. There has been the gigantic amount of literature lately about the school leadership. However, many people still misunderstand the concept of leadership. In order to learn the concept of leadership, people required to do more than reading just some literatures or fantasizing about what great the leaders should be.
If everyone in an organization were a follower with no leaders then the organization would never advance or be directed to one outcome. Having good leadership skills can help promote others to work better. However, to have good leadership skills there needs to be knowledge gained by interacting with other’s needs or wants.
Understanding multiple leadership methodologies is critical when facing the surfeit of problems that emerge when managing the diverse population found in higher education (Nworie, 2012; Wang & Berger, 2010). In order to understand and apply leadership methodologies effectively, leadership cannot be studied in a singular context, but must be explored in complex settings and using methodologies that fit the needs of the situation, the organization, and the people involved (Bass, 2008). To demonstrate knowledge of leadership theories and knowledge of how those theories are applied in different context, the discussion is divided into two parts. The first portion will discuss 4 theories in educational leadership, provide examples of how each theory
Leadership is a great quality to have, as it can be implemented across every industry or organization there is. From running a multi-billion dollar company to organizing a small protest or petition group, leadership is useful everywhere. But what defines a good leader? While some would list charisma or respect as qualities a leader would possess, a resent survey found the 10 characteristics to most resonate with the modern leader or a role model. They are; Uncompromising integrity in both ethics and profession, High energy, Efficient at working priorities, Courage, Commitment and dedication, Unorthodox and creative, Goal orientated, Inspired and contagious enthusiasm, Level headed and A desire to help others.[2] These traits and others can come instinctively, but they can also be developed with work. Depending on your learning style, there are many way in which you can learn and develop these qualities. Extra tertiary courses like Tafe 's Diploma of leadership and manage can help
A teacher leader is probably one of the most diverse terms in the educational world. If you ask five people what a teacher leader is, you will get five different answers. Leadership is the guidance of others towards a common goal. A teacher leader is someone who has been in the trenches and understands the needs of the students, the teachers, and the school community as a whole. Their role should not be as an administrator but someone whom the teachers can lean on and look to for support and guidance. This person needs to be willing to step up and be a leader in various roles whether that be as a mentor, an instructional specialist, a support person for the teachers, or just a role model for new teachers. The teacher leader needs to be willing to listen, collaborate, and participate with a diverse group of people who all have the same common goal: student success. The most effective teacher leaders lead by example and do not laud their position over anyone. They are empathetic and know that teachers are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. Their job is to become the cheerleader, the voice of reason, and the mother hen, switching hats at a moment’s notice.
Leadership and management are two fundamental concepts which are involved in the effective management of organizations. Leadership in my opinion is a complex concept, which includes association of human qualities and the result of their activities. To be a great leader means not only following own visions, but also work towards company’s goals.
Education is a very important aspect in the life of a child. The level of success a student has in the classroom is greatly influenced by their teachers. Students, as well as their parents, depend on the teachers to guide them through their education. But who guides a teacher to perform successfully in the classroom? Principals and teachers play an important role in schools. A good relationship among school leaders and teachers is necessary and play an important role in making improvements in the school. Leadership refers to the “process in which one person successfully exerts influence over others to reach desired objectives”. (Okoji, 2015) Good leadership involves honesty, vision, confidence and commitment. It is the ability to inspire a
