History has witnessed abundance of literatures where an individual values and possess their beliefs towards a higher being. During the early Americas, various literature were based on the role of God in society. Based on the work of Puritans, such as Anne Bradstreet, William Bradford, Jonathan Edward and Cotton Mather, many believed that God played a significant aspect on their daily lives. During the 1600’s, Puritans displayed their presumption towards God by portraying their willingness to sacrifice all. Many Puritans traveled from their home country to come to the New World for a better life for themselves and their family. In Anne Bradstreet work she sacrifice her home where she had many memories of her family. However, sacrifice does not only contain materialistic object, it can be known as moving to a new place knowing the risks. Specifically, in William Bradford, the leader of the Pilgrims, work of literature the idea of sacrifice is portrayed as the journey of moving from their home country where they had everything to another country. For example, in Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford, Puritans leave their home country England to travel to the New World for a better life. They were aware of the struggles they were going to face because they were traveling to an unknown country. During their voyage, they face many hardship, such as harsh storms and the instability of the boat. When arriving to the New World, they continued to face more conflicts with starvation and harsh winter. Through their belief in God, they were able to survive on the new land. Furthermore, because of God they believed that Squanto, a man who spoke their language and know how to hunt, was sent to guided the and help them survive in the new territory.
