At this point we know that Tony D., also known as Blade because of his violence with knives, is an intimidating kid who scares a lot of people. Since Freak is so small you would expect him to be scared of Blade too, but instead he sticks up for both himself and Max and calls Blade a cretin right in front of his face. This shows how Freak did something that no one expected him to do. Since Freak is small and sweet no one thought he would even dare to call anyone, especially Blade, a cretin. Max and Freak’s bond and friendship is so strong that Freak figured out a way to save each other from Killer Kane. They both know that Killer Kane is so strong that he can hurt anybody but when it comes to their friendship anything can happen. Another example that shows Max and Freak’s unbreakable bond is on page 151 when Freak influences Max to write a book “‘... Don’t get me upset,’ “he warns. ‘I won’t have the time, so you’ll have to do it. Just write it all down like you’re talking. Put in all the fun we had, the cool things we did. Our adventures.’ ‘But you know I can’t write, Kevin.’ ‘It’s all in your head, Max, everything you can remember. Just tell the story of Freak the Mighty, no big deal.’” By this point we understand that Freak gave Max the courage to write a book. Their friendship was so strong
