The last thing I expected to hear sitting on the exam table in my doctor’s office was a question about what I needed to do now that I turned 18 years old. I replied that I needed to apply to college because I was finally an adult. Much to my surprise, that was not the answer he wanted. To him, voting for the first time should be my first priority now that I was an adult. Our conversation had a huge impact on me because I had never considered my new right to vote or even put much thought into politics in general. Just because they believe a certain way does not mean that I am required to feel the same. They told me to be open minded, but most importantly become informed. I am looking forward to understanding the differences between the parties, and the government processes.
I feel that being informed is part of a person’s civic duty, and typically is a way for individuals to stay on top of current affairs that might influence them. By becoming involved with the issues in the community, people usually demonstrate pride and ownership to find solutions for problems. Disgruntled Americans complain about the government, but if they did not participate in the political process by voting, they do not have much of an argument. Government issues that I vote for today will have a direct result on my future. In the next decade, I will be entering the workforce, buying a house, and purchasing health care. The policies put in place today will directly affect my future. Just because I am only 18 does not mean that I will not be directly impacted by the elections that are currently being held. It is my goal to learn more about the candidates and parties this semester. As it is my duty, I will analyze the information that is available to me to make informed decisions for my
