Martin Luther King Jr. is regarded as one of the most influential African American leaders of all time. He is known for the promotion of equality and freedom as well as countless acts of selflessness and nonviolence. Dr. King’s speech came at the perfect time in U.S. history by showing what unity looks like, and without it, the country we call home may be a place of major divide. This was delivered August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and is remembered as one of the great speeches in modern history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up in Atlanta GA and his father who was a Christian pastor, just like he was, gave him his background of quality morals. Dr. King began preaching at a young age where he went to Morehouse College at the young age of 15 to escape being drafted into World War II. He finished and went to Crozer Seminary School in Pennsylvania and went on to get his Doctorate at Boston University. After this, he started as an civil rights activist where he would influence millions of people to strive for his vision of a nation in unity. “Freedom” is repeated twenty times and this is one of the major points in his speech. Ending segregation and racism are one of his goals in his life mission but he also want people to understand that being in this great country includes being united. “United” is literally in our country's name yet there was a clear divide. Another word that was repeated was “we”, this ties into the unification of the country. He says “we” thirty times in this five minute speech to emphasize his message. His “Dream” of becoming a unified, peaceful, and civil country is repeated eleven times.
