In his narrative essay “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” David Sedaris describes his experience going to France to study the French language at the age of forty. Throughout the text, Sedaris uses rhetorical devices such as hyperbole, point of view, language, and appeals to ethos to communicate both his story and the message that the challenges you face while learning something new will help you. Sedaris begins his essay by describing that he has moved to France to study French. He describes his initial discomfort on the first day, as he feels out of place compared to the other students, who appear to be speaking excellent French. For example, Sedaris uses hyperbolic statements to connect to the audience by using humor. The statement, “... and had front teeth the size of tombstones...” (P8) is meant to be humorous, which creates a sense of amiability between Sedaris and his audience. When Sedaris says, “Her reaction led me to believe that these mistakes were the capital crimes in the country of France,” (P16) he is referring to his poor pronunciation, and is highlighting the teacher’s extreme responses to the slightest mistake. Language is also used to create an easygoing relationship between the speaker in the audience. Sedaris uses informal language--as can be seen in the quote,“the teacher killed some time …” (P14)--to create a companionable tone, and makes it appear as though the story is being told to you by a friend, rather than reading an essay. He is able to achieve his explicit purpose of telling the story of his experience learning the French language by using first person point of view, as well as by appealing heavily to ethos in doing this. By writing the essay as a first person narrative, Sedaris effectively tells his story as truth, and is also able to achieve his implicit purpose because he himself has overcome challenges in learning something new. Sedaris’s appeals to ethos work in the same way, in that they make him a credible speaker, which makes him effective in achieving his purposes. By using hyperbole and informal language, Sedaris creates a casual tone, which allows him to connect with his audience. This makes the essay more personal to each reader, and allows for a larger scope of readers, as it lacks academic vernacular. This is especially helpful in achieving the implicit purpose. Since Sedaris intends to convey that learning something new is filled with obstacles which must be overcome, one can infer that the text itself is directed at those who are likely to be learning new things; while this can be anyone in the world, the essay is most relatable to students.
