The texts “Man’s first steps on the Moon”, a news article by the Times of London, “In Event of Moon Disaster”, a prepared speech spoken by President Nixon written by William Safire, “The July 16, 1969,Launch:A symbol of Mans Greatness”, a commentary by philosopher Ayn Rand, and “Transported”, a political catoon by Herblock, were all showed rhetorical appeals. They were showed the types of situation to persuade the audience which shows the emotions about 1969 Apollo 11 mission that landed the first humans on the moon The article engages the audience and the speaker through giving the description of the place as observed by the astronauts. The use of imagery and realistic description helps the audience to develop a mental image of how the place looks like. Rand vividly explains what he observes as the space shuttle burnt into ashes. Rand uses ethos to appeal to the audience by stating that ‘what was seen was in naked essentials but in reality it cannot happen in work of art’. It is therefore; clear that what happened was observed as a reality but was a critical mistake in the work of art. Pathos is used to explain how the speaker joined the applauding cloud. This is because they had a common motive which was impossible to let go and thus he found himself waving to the rocket involuntarily as it took off . In addition, the author also uses logo in this article by stating that “how great is a man and how safe is nature when he conquers it”. This statement triggers the reader to evaluate the safety of the space used in respect to the natural forces.
