Golf – Is It A Sport?
In the article, “A randomized trial of traditional and golf-specific resistance training in amateur female golfers: Benefits beyond golf performance” the authors compare the impacts of golf-specific resistance training (GSRT) to the traditional resistance training (TRAD) to establish whether physical exercise has any impact on golf outcomes. Dr. Hegedus based this study on the discovery from previous literature establishing resistance training does benefit performance in golf. This research used a comparison method between the traditional resistance-training program and a golf specific program to investigate the effects of a 10-week training program on golf performance on amateur female golfers. In this article, the authors highlight the importance of participating in golf-specific exercises to meet the physical demands of the game. Golf is characterized long periods of low intensity and short periods of high intensity, which can take a physical toll on the player if they are not mentally and physically prepared to meet the challenge. With the advancement in medicine and technology, research in the fields of motor learning, biomechanics and motor control has contributed in understanding the physical requirements of golf in relation to the muscles used during the game and it’s been helpful in developing training specific programs that can be useful in improving a golfer’s performance through training and exercise. Specific golf exercise is therefore useful to golfers and help to meet the physical demands of the game while preparing them mentally to handle the stresses of long walking, which helps reduce fatigue during play. Biomechanical investigations have focused on the components of golf swings, club head velocity and ball launch characteristics to devise accurate training programs that have increased the golfer’s performance and prevented injuries from describing appropriate physical exercise to professional …show more content…

With the professional golf training, Kerrie Evans and Neil Tuttle deem specific golf training exercise beneficial to improving a golfer’s performance and output more than the traditional training methods. Hagel et al. on the other hand, argues both training methods have similar benefits. According to their results, the participants under golf-specific resistance training (GSRT) and the traditional resistance training (TRAD) noted the same levels of improvement when their results were
