Invictus and Mandela: “Is it Hollywood or is it History”
Have you ever even thought about standing up for a race that isnt of your own? Would you have the courage? Even with other people putting you down and trying to hurt your feeling, could you still stand tall? Well in the movie Invictus a very brave man stood up for what he believed was right. I have read the bio of Nelson Mandela and also watched the movie Invictus, even though they are both basically about the same man I believe there is a few many different differences. I have even looked some info on Nelson Mandela myself and I believe that after watching the movie Invictus and all of the researching that is is true that the movie is more history rather than hollywood. The director of the movie would be Clint Eastwood and the writer is Anthony Peckham. The main actors of this movie include Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, and Tony Kgoroge. The company that is in charge of this amazing movie would be the Warner Bros. This movie was released in the year of 2009, on the 11th of December. This movie is about the great Nelson Mandela and his journey with the springbok’s and their great win in the world cup in the year of 1995. The movie starts of by talking about how Nelson Mandela was being released and how he became president of South Africa. On Mandela’s first day he made it clear to his workers that if they want to keep their jobs that they will have to work hard. Also on his first day there was a little problem, the blacks found out that they were being forced to work with the white security guards. Then Mandela gathers up his security guards and heads out to his first rugby game to shake hands with all of the players but little did he know as he was shaking their hands he was actually getting booed, the crowd wasn’t very big fans of Mandela. The sports council actually wanted to the the springboks out, but with the help of Nelson they got to stay in. The first game that the springbok played after finding out that they can stay the actually lost so they decided to make a toast but instead of a normal oe they drank some bad beer so that they will remember to play hard so they never go through that again. Nelson decided to invite the captain of the team (francois) to explain what he was doing and to tell him he needs to win the World cup. And to show that they really love the sport and to advertise themselves Nelson came up with the idea of going around the country and coaching the kids. He fought for what he believed in, he was tenacious in doing so, and he stood up for true equality for all. Mandela is a man that I believe our current politics could learn a lot from. Our nation is so divided right now, that we need people like him to rise up and show the world that you can hold fast to your beliefs without ostracizing those around you.
Human history has been marked with long and painful struggles that fought for human rights and freedoms. Discrimination and racial oppression has always been one of the most controversial struggles for mankind. For South Africa, it was a country where black people were oppressed by the white minority. The colonization of South Africa began in the 18th century by the Dutch empire after Dutch trading companies started using its cape as a center for trading between Asia and Europe (sahistory.org.za). Soon after, the British took over the country and declared it part of the British Empire (sahistory.org.za). Decades after, Afrikaners, who descended from the original Dutch settlers that occupied South Africa, started working on creating a state that separates between black people and whites. Their plans were to create a separation between black people and whites that involved excluding blacks from all types of social, economic, and political activities within the country. All South African natives knew the bad conditions that their people were forced to live in but only a few of them took the responsibility of sacrificing their lives and freedom for the rights of their people. One South African citizen, Nelson Mandela, can be considered the main hero for the South African freedom revolution and the hero for millions of people fighting for their freedoms worldwide. Mandela’s long walk for freedom defined South African history and entered world history as one of the most influential fights for freedom and human rights in the world.

Nelson Mandela has an inspiring story of fighting Apartheid forces and surviving a long prison sentence all in the name of freedom and equal rights. Through Nelson Mandela’s constant fight for freedom of the African people from white apartheid forces, he was dominated by the corrupt government. After uprising numerous riots against apartheid forces, Mandela was sent to jail for twenty-seven years revealing the cruelty that humans can possess. With the strong will power and complete support of the African people, Mandela survived his prison sentence and became the first democratically elected president of South Africa exposing the strength in human nature by showing that humans can persevere through tough times. Mandela left a profound impact on the African people by saving them from corrupt Apartheid rule and bringing a democratic government. Thus teaching the world that in an event where a body of people is suppressed, they will inevitably rebel by any means necessary to gain their freedom.
In conclusion, Mandela's autobiography is a brilliant book written by an incredible individual. I wish I could of read the whole book for this essay, but that was not possible. It is hard to write an essay on the first 5 parts when I know some things that happened further in the book. I did not know if I should include that information in the essay, but I did not involve it. This book helped to show the other side of the story. We always hear the victor's story and in this class we got to hear the other side of the story.
Nelson Mandela taught us that the humanity all of us share can help us transcend the sins some of us commit. There is no better example of the transformative power of tolerance and reconciliation than Nelson Mandela and his inspiring work in overthrowing the apartheid government in South Africa. He understood the power of words to change minds and the power of peaceful deeds to open hearts. His life reminds us that justice and tolerance can overcome even the greatest cruelty. Nelson Mandela faced one of the greatest evils of our time.

Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders of our time. In the movie Invictus, the devotion and love he had for the South African people is exemplified. The movie was named after a Victorian poem that brought President Mandela strength while in prison. The meaning of Invictus is “Undefeated”, a perfect fit for this movie. For twenty-seven years he sat in a cell because he believed in a country without apartheid, a country with freedom and human rights. He fought for a country where all people were equal, treated with respect and given equal opportunity. Nelson Mandela looms large in the actions of activists and politicians. He inspired music and movies, and swayed the mind of powerful leaders. Making him an influential person who affected American culture.
In 1993, he became the president of South Africa after a long journey of seeking freedom and equality among his people. Under his power, his country attained democratic government without discrimination between the white and black people. He had never talked about racism during his presidential time and had never responded harshly against any racism action. He had very successful time in leading South Africa until he retired because of his health bad condition. Finally, he died in 2013, but he remained in our heart as strong leader, peaceful person, and free man.
