Bryan Bunch, editor of Scientific Publishing, claims that chlamydia “is the most common disease in the United States” (Bunch). Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease commonly found in people all over the world. It is estimated that around 2% of all Americans, including those who are not sexually active, have at least one sexually transmitted disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The pathogen name, chlamydia trachomatis comes from the Greek word, “chlamys”, which translates to “cloak draped around the shoulder”. This name is very accurate as it describes the way the disease wraps around cells in the body (Pomazal). Anyone sexually active in Africa or India is by far more likely to be infected than people in other regions of the world. Also, the disease is most common in sexually active women under the age of twenty five that have unprotected sex often. Heterosexual men are also at a high risk for chlamydia. The disease is not as common among homosexual men and women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5% of heterosexual women aged between fifteen and twenty four have the disease, whereas about 1% of homesexual men are infected (CDC). Healthwise reports that “chlamydia tests use a sample of body fluid or urine to see whether chlamydia bacteria are present” in the body”. The two types of chlamydia tests are the nucleic acid amplification test and chlamydia culture. The nucleic acid amplification test finds the genetic material of chlamydia bacteria. This test is most popular because it is quick and easy. Contrastingly, chlamydia culture is a special test that looks similar to a cup. What it does is it allows the bacteria to grow to see if it is present. the test takes about a week to get results and must be done in a lab. Because it is time consuming, difficult, and expensive the test is not as popular as the nucleic acid amplification test. However chlamydia culture is a more accurate test (Healthwise). Once tested, those testing positive for chlamydia should take 100mg of Doxycycline orally twice a day (Drugs.com). Chlamydia is very easy to treat, however the main issue with treatment is the lack of symptoms. Individual level interventions are essential when creating sexual health related interventions that target college aged students. Interventions targeting the individual level of the social ecological model are devised to make an impact on the individual’s knowledge, perception, and self-efficacy, among other factors, in regard to the behavior being changed (Glanz & Rimer, 2005). To find the relevant literature, the following search terms were referenced in both PubMed and Google Scholar: “STI”, “Screening”, “Behavior”, “Knowledge”, “Chlamydia”, “Students”, and “College”. This literature review focuses on interventions that targeted behavior changes in individuals in relation to a variety of STIs, including chlamydia, the outcome of interest.
There are two tests that doctors can use to detect gonorrhea, urine test or a swab of the affected area. The urine test can identify a disease, even when there are no signs or symptoms displayed. There is a swab test of the affected area, sometimes there are multiple test done to detect which sexually transmitted disease is present, home testing is available. When you have a home test done it is sent off to a lab to get analyzed and identify what is present. Gonorrhea is treated by several kinds of antibiotics, which are ceftriaxone, azithromycin, and doxycycline. The treatment is used for people who have tested positive for gonorrhea or somebody that had intercourse with someone that was diagnosed. When newborns are treated for gonorrhea, they are given medication in their eye. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States (Cook 210). There are over 100 types of HPV viruses and 30 or more of these viruses that can be sexually transmitted. (Vamos, McDermott, Daley 303). There are approximately 20 million people in the United States that are infected with HPV, and there are about 6.2 million new HPV cases each year (Vamos, McDermott, and Daley 303). Even though most HPV cases are non-cancerous, two of the HPV strains are known to cause 70 percent of cervical cancer, and the other two strains cause 90 percent of genital warts cases (Javitt, Berkowitz, and Gostin 384). Mendenhall, Elisa, and O'Mara stated, "Because of the cancer link, the strains that are the greatest medical concerns are those that are sexually transmitted"(49). It is estimated that it costs the United States about five billion dollars each year to diagnose and treat HPV related diseases (Cook 211).

However, while this “bedroom” activity may be fun, there are now ample reports indicating that rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in teenagers have skyrocketed. Current data reveal that nearly 25% of adolescent girls who have sex are infected with one of the four commonly sexually transmitted infections-namely gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes and HIV (Kann et al, 2015). Nationally, the prevalence of STDs account for 50% of cases in people under the age of 25. While every ethnic and race has been known to be affected, African American youth are disproportionately affected. These data are not a surprise to professionals who are engaged in adolescent sexual health because the numbers have been slowly creeping up over the decades, despite national educational policies to counter the threat of STDs (Sales & DiClemente, 2016). All the STDs have a significant impact on sexual and reproductive health, if they are mot promptly diagnosed and treated. Although many preventive strategies have been implemented in all communities, the rates of STDs are still increasing (Madkour et al, 2016).

Most STDs are spread while having sex, but oral sex can also spread disease. Some STDs are passed from a mother to her child while pregnant, when the disease enters the baby's bloodstream, during childbirth as the baby passes through the birth canal, or after birth, when the baby drinks infected breast milk. AIDS can be transmitted by blood contact such as open wounds, between people who share infected needles or received through an injection of infected blood. Some people believe that STDs can be transmitted through shaking hands or other casual contact, or through contact with inanimate objects such as clothing or toilet seats, but they can’t.
